"We're going to the bathroom," Madi announced about 2 minutes after we settled down at the table.
"We just got here," Jake protested with a laugh.
"I don't care," she snapped as she pulled me up from my seat. What was with the tude?
Jake said nothing further as Madi practically dragged me to the bathroom.
"Madi, what's going on? Is everything okay?" I ask her concerned. She takes a deep breath and stares at the ground. I can see tears welling up in her eyes.
"I think I need to break up with Jake," she blurts suddenly. My eyes grow wide with disbelief. She can't be serious.
"Are you joking? Why?" I asked, genuinely confused.
"Because I don't think he likes me as much as he used to. I think he's falling for someone else," she informs me as if this is obvious. But there's something in her tone that seems hinting, almost as if there's a secret message.
"Really? Who?" I tread cautiously in fear of the answer.
She looks up for the first time since we entered the bathroom and gives me the dirtiest look I've ever seen.
"You," she snaps.
"Me? Madi, how could you think that?" I practically shriek.
"I can see it in his eyes. He looks at you the same way he looked at me when we first met. I've been with Jake for a really long time and I've never seen him look at anyone else like that," she begins to choke up on her last few words and I just feel absolutely awful. It was a little suspicious how Jake was hugging me so tightly and how he told me he was happy to see me again. But he's been with Madi for 5 years. How could I possibly compete with that?
"Madi, I'm so sorry," I attempt to console her but she swats my hand away. "For what it's worth, I would never go out with him. I couldn't do that to you. And besides, I'm with Zach and I intend to stay with Zach for a really long time."
"Yeah well I intended to stay with Jake for a really long time," she sobbed. Oh, that was so not the right thing to say.
"Madi, I'm sorry," I repeated but I knew it didn't help. She wiped her eyes and turned to face the mirror.
"I'm going home," she declared.
"Madi," I pleaded but she shook her head vehemently. With one last glance in the mirror she turned on her heel and stormed out of the bathroom. I quickly followed after her, not sure what to do.
"Hey guys, I'm not feeling to well. I think I'm going to head home," she tells them when she reaches the end of the table.
"Oh, I didn't realize we were leaving so soon," Jake said as he went to stand.
"We're not," she snapped and Jake remained in his seat. "You're not. I can drive myself home."
"If you insist," I bit my tongue, slightly annoyed that Jake didn't put up more of a fight.
"Feel better Madi," Austin told her sweetly. She nodded gratefully. The rest of the group chorused with feel betters and goodbyes before Madi hurried out of the restaurant.
I sat back down next to Zach and didn't say a word.
"What was that about?" Jake asked confused.
I shook my head, deciding it was best to play dumb right now.
"Come on, you have to know," Jake urged.
I just shrugged. "She told me she didn't feel good and that she wanted to go home." I lied. "That was it."
