My feet hit the floor with a thump. My leg howled in protest, but its cries where soon drowned out by the adrenaline pulsing through my veins. The evening sun had just passed over the woods, setting the hills alight, night soon to arrive. The nursery rhyme my father had sang to me, slipped into my head.
Never go over the wall.
Never go into the wood. The Hunters gun has found its target
And next it's coming for youNever go over the wall.
Never go into the wood.Where evil grows
The vermin knows
It's never safe for us there.Never go over the wall.
Never go into the wood.Where a hundred years ago
A shining city grows
The great dark city of Tiyrin. My father certainly hadn't followed the rules.
But then the hunters gun had found him. His last words telling me to run.
And I did.
Right back to my mother and one year old Elfie.
I ran. But I should of stayed.
A gentle hand rested in my back. And I realised my shoulders had caved inwards, my head bent lower, my hands curled into fists.
"Lets go." I growled, shaking his hand off. I didn't need his sympathy. So we set off. The gunshot still echoing in my head.Walked in silence for several minutes. The pond was in the heart of the wood. Much further in then me and Damien normally ventured.
Just as I saw the water in sight, I felt Damien grab my arm, and gently pulled me down. He dragged me into a near by bush, and then I saw what he saw. Two wood guards armed, prowling through the trees.
My heart skipped at beat. It was rare to see even one guard, let alone two in the same place. Beside me Damien was still, I could of sworn he wasn't breathing. Nether of us moved in the undergrowth. Until the wood hunters moved on, and I drew a breath. We were just about crawl out, when we heard a noise. Not human, but animal. And a large animal. My mouth watered as I watched the King of Tiyrin's deer step out of the undergrowth. I held my knife out in front of me. I could throw it fifty feet and the knife would still hit its target. I felt Damien hand on my shoulder, he was shaking his head at me, and for the first time I could see real fear in his eyes. I gripped the knife hilt harder. The whites of my knuckles showing. Kyra face appeared in my head, surprise and congratulations at the meal I had prepared for her. That deer could feed my family - and many others, for a week.
I forgot how close the wood hunters still were, as the point of my knife punctured the hide of the deer. She let out a screech that seemed to echo through the trees. It was too loud. I had to kill it now before the wood hunters came back. I plunged toward it, but Damien grabbed my arm.
"Ani, no!" He hissed.
It was then, the wood hunters came crashing through the trees.Fifty views already?! Thank you guys!
Look out for a new chapter every day!
