The body fell to the floor at the doctor's feet with a sickening thud that echoed throughout the small room like thunder. An ocean of jumbled thoughts and voices stumbled through his brain as he tried to make sense of what his enemy had just dropped at his feet. The doctor's eyes shifted from the bleeding heap of a man before him, to the snidely grinning monster that held a bloodied knife as if it were a toy. His eyebrows raised slightly as he watched the doctor carefully for his response. It was clear to him, however, that he'd rendered the doctor 'in shock'.
With a rattled breath and stinging eyes, Doctor Schneeplestein dipped to his knees and lifted the man's head into his lap. The fresh wound that split open his throat was gushing at an alarming rate. Blood trailed from the man's lips and nose just as fluidly as the blood from his throat. In a panic, Schneeplestein shucked off his surgeon's coat and bunched it up at his throat in an attempt to stop the blood loss. The thin white fabric quickly darkened as blood seeped all the way through it, staining the doctor's hands. This was the second time this wound had reopened on Jack and he feared that this time it would be too late.
"Jack," Schneeplestein panted, his free hand frantically searching his friend's wrist for a pulse. "Jack, stay with me, buddy. I cannot lose you. Not again."
He pulled his head down against Jack's chest, listening for a heartbeat. To his relief, a faint thumping was barely audible. Jack tried to gasp for air, only to choke on the blood that's pooled in his throat. He began coughing, the blood splattering all over Schneeplestein. A pair of bright, fearful blue eyes peered up at him. Schneeplestein felt a horrible stinging sensation in his heart as he stared back into his dying friend's eyes. He looked so afraid. A child living their worst nightmare. Except there was no waking up from this nightmare.
The agony that Schneeplestein felt in his heart as he watched Jack claw helplessly at his throat–trying to keep it from bleeding out–was nearly unbearable. There was nothing he could do. Anti's shrill laughter grew louder as Jack grew weaker. His laugh was nagging. A sound that seemed to say "You lose" without Anti having to utter a single word. He hated it. Everything Anti did was infuriating. He just wanted him to go away. Why did he have to torment them?
Schneeplestein felt a hand on his shoulder as Anti began to speak behind him. "You can save him, Doc. I can help you save him. Accept my aid and you will be strong enough to save him. All it takes is a simple hand shake. A hand shake and you'll save your friend. It'd be foolish of you to refuse. Look at him, Doctor. He's afraid. He's counting on you. Are you going to fail him this time, Doctor? Like you failed Peter?"
Anti's hand lingered on Schneeplestein's shoulder for a moment longer, letting his words sink in. He could save Jack. But at what cost? Schneeplestein wanted so badly to agree but he'd seen what Anti had done to Chase. He was a shell of his former self now. A puppet. Anti's toy. Schneeplestein shivered at the thought of losing himself to Anti. But if he refused, he was certain that Jack would die. If he agreed, Jack might survive so that when he recovers he'll come back for him. Won't he?
Schneeplestein's eyes found Jack's glazed blue ones and quickly made up his mind. This was a sacrifice he was willing to make. Jack was a good man with so much strength and love in his heart. He had helped Schneeplestein through so much in the time that they'd known one another. He had Signe, his community, his family, his friends, and the other egos to support him. Who did Schneeplestein have other than him? Marvin and Jackieboy Man never paid any attention to him, claiming he was psychotic. Chase was gone now because of Anti. His family had left him after Peter's death and he wasn't even allowed to see his kids anymore. He only had Jack. Jack was Schneeplestein's only friend now. His family.
With a shaky breath, Schneeplestein lifted his head and wiped his bloody palm off on his jumper. He almost felt cowardly as he extended his trembling hand out to the glitching madman in front of him. Anti's hand was cold and rough as it gripped Schneeplestein's tightly. Something about Anti's air of authority made the doctor look up and lock eyes with him. He could see everything in his eyes. The insanity, the drive, the hunger, the need for control, the will power, the... sorrow? For a fraction of a second Schneeplestein caught a glimpse of something he hadn't imagined he'd ever see expressed by Anti. Anti was hurting and he was doing everything he could to cover it up.
Anti seemed to notice Schneeplestein's curious gaze and hardened his own eyes. They flickered a monstrous black shade as he began to take control of Schneeplestein. Schneeplestein's entire body went ice cold as he felt his veins seize up. Out of the corner of his eyes, he could see very prominently, that all of his veins were visibly blackening. Panic bubbled in his chest and he suddenly found himself trying to yank free of Anti's grip. The smirk on Anti's face told Schneeplestein all he needed to know. He had lost to Anti.
And yet... He felt better than he ever had before. As if he'd finally been able to take a full, deep breath. He felt more awake, more alive. His eyes fell shut for a second as he adjusted to the new, empowering sensation that coursed through him. He was obligated to save Jack's life but at the same time, he felt an intense urge to leave Jack and follow Anti as he glided from the room. The sharp inhale that came from Jack's lips brought him back to reality.
He scooped Jack up in his arms and rushed him to his office where an exam table was prepped as always. That would have to do for now. Jack slumped against the cold metal table as if his body was made from jelly. Schneeplestein quickly found his suturing equipment and went to work. There was no time for anesthesia now, knowing that if Jack were to go under now, he would die. "This is going to hurt a lot, Jackie, but I promise you, you will be alright in the end."
By the time he had finished, Jack's neck was completely stitched together again and all the blood was cleaned away from his wounds. Jack would be unconscious for a long time as his body recovered, he knew that much. Jack had managed to stay conscious through the entire surgery and, as Schneeplestein predicted after seeing Jack's strength, would probably not lose consciousness for another minute or so. He took this chance to speak to Jack with what little sanity he still retained.
"Jack... Jack, be careful. Chase and I will have been long gone by the time you recover. The statuses of Marvin and Jackieboy Man, I cannot say as of right now. I am... losing my grasp as I am speaking to you, my... friend." A sharp pain cut through Schneeplestein's head as a migraine hit him, drawing a moan from his lips as he clutched the area above his left eye. "Jack, save us. Please. Save Chase first. His kids, Jack. He needs to see them again. I am so sorry that I cannot help you anymore. My only hope is that you will forgive me for giving in to Anti's control. I did it to save you."
A wave of nausea swept over Schneeplestein as he felt his body begin to twitch. With a swear, he forced his legs to carry him sluggishly from his office and into the bedroom he and Chase shared a bunk in. Thankfully, Chase was nowhere to be seen. He collapsed to his knees weakly as soon as the door shut, clutching his head between his hands. A hoarse scream left his lips as he fought with Anti's voice for control over his own thoughts. He didn't want to give in. He couldn't give in. He was better than this.
His eyes found his reflection in the metal of his medical case and he fought the urge to burst into tears. His once blue eyes were now as black as Anti's and veined trails snaked their way down his cheeks like black tears. His complexion was paler than a ghost's and his lips had gained a faint purple tint to them. His hands shook even more now as he imagined his kids seeing him this way. Or his wife. Or Jack. Several tears escaped down his cheeks, staining the same black trails into his cheeks in a new place. He only prayed that Jack would be well enough to save him soon. He was scared of what he had become to save his friend.
