"So what? At least none of you have to listen to your baby girl cry herself to sleep at night because mommy and daddy don't love each other anymore!" Chase's furious shout produced a shocked silence amongst the bickering egos. Each one looked at one another with the same guilty, disheartened expression. Nobody dared to say another word. Chase himself was shocked that he'd shouted like that. He'd promised himself that he'd never lose his cool around his friends or family. That he'd never be like Anti.
Now he glanced up at the silently glitching man leaning against the wall and grimaced. Anti was calm for once, a twinge of regret glittering in his dark eyes. Chase heaved a shaky sigh and looked away from the woeful madman now, unable to find the words to even apologize for shouting. Instead, he kicked his feet against the wall behind him, propelling him forward enough that he could walk away. He needed time to get over what had just happened. The egos watched as he left the room, all unable to find the courage to go and console him.
Everyone looked to Schneeplestein now, who was undoubtedly more horrified than any of the others. Sure, Marvin and Jackieboy man were both startled and sympathetic (even Anti had begun to feel bad for him), but only Schneeplestein understood what Chase was going through right now. His own children had been taken from him completely, his wife having left him in a fury. He still remembered visiting his son's principal once to talk about all the fights he got into. It wasn't until after his mother scolded him and grounded him that Schneeplestein learned that his little boy got into fights because the other kids were insulting his father.
Schneeplestein felt a hand on his shoulder now, drawing his attention to the left of him where Marvin flashed a supportive half smile. Memories of all the birthday parties he'd asked Marvin to perform at overwhelmed him now. One in particular stuck out to him now, though.
A small, old, and rusty park near home with rotting park benches and dying wildlife was where his oldest daughter demanded her birthday be held. She was turning seven that year and she wanted everything to be magic themed. Marvin seemed ecstatic about going to see his little admirer and was determined to give her and all the other first graders a show they'd never forget. Marvin rounded up all the kids and got them into a circle around an old, broken bench.
He had Schneeplestein's daughter sit on what was left of the teetering wooden bench. As anyone would imagine, she was terrified, expecting it to collapse under her and hurt her. Marvin assured her she would be okay as he plucked a small white flower from the ground. He held it in his hands where no one could see and like magic, the single flower became a crown of daisies. He blew on it gently, sending surprised gasps amongst the children as the crown floated up and landed delicately atop her head. Schneeplestein could hardly hide his grin when he saw the glimmer in his daughter's eyes upon catching her gaze. Marvin's show wasn't over just yet though, for he picked up a twig off the ground and waved it around as if he were Harry Potter.
The bench immediately popped to life, repairing itself beneath the small girl and causing shouts and laughter to rise up amongst the group. Kids jumped to their feet all around Marvin, begging him to share his secrets with them. Above the crowd, Schneeplestein saw Marvin hoist a small body up onto his shoulders. He made his way over to Schneeplestein in a matter of seconds, his grin as wide as his niece's. "That was so awesome, Uncle Marvin! Best. Birthday. Ever!"
"You can help him, you know." Marvin said now, his tone solemn and sorrowful. It was a huge contrast from what it had once been in brighter days. "He needs someone like you who knows what he's going through right now. None of the rest of us have any proper families aside from each other."
Schneeplestein lifted his gaze to see that the other two egos were both nodding in agreement. Anti was the last person Schneeplestein expected to feel any sort of remorse or empathy towards another person and yet here he was, looking to the doctor to go and help his brother. They were all brothers and regardless of their arguments and differences, they loved one another. Anti stepped forward and offered Schneeplestein his hand to take.
Although confused, he took his hand and allowed Anti to lead the doctor to Chase's bedroom. The other two followed closely behind. A simple charm from Marvin and the door was unlocked. Schneeplestein pushed the door open gently and stepped inside with the others nearby. Chase grumbled something under the covers of his bed, followed by a stifled sob.
Anti released Schneeplestein's hand, gliding over to the wall to the right of Chase's bed and watched the room intently. Schneeplestein realized it was his turn to do something. "Chase, buddy, none of us are mad at you for yelling. We understand you are going through some troubles right now. Take it from me, Chase. Divorce is hard. It hurts everyone involved. The best you can do for your kids is stay positive and try to make the best out of things. Take them to a park for a day. Take them swimming. They still love you, Chase. So do we."
Chase slowly crawled up from under his covers to look at the egos. Schneeplestein made a gesture to ask permission before going to sit at the edge of his bed. He nodded gently, allowing the doctor to sit beside him and continue to talk about their families. It seemed that slowly, Chase was beginning to feel better.
Marvin had conjured up a small white rabbit and influenced it to go and cuddle up on Chase's lap. Surprisingly, Chase adored it and continued to stroke it absentmindedly as he continued to talk with Schneeplestein. Even Jackieboy Man pitched in, unclasping his cape and draping it over Chase's shoulders. Anti disappeared for a brief moment, only to return with a pint of ice cream and a spoon.
Chase was astonished when Anti handed it to him gently. His jaw dropped and his eyes widened at the kindness displayed by who Chase had formerly, lovingly nicknamed Psycho. "Why are you being nice to me, Anti? You've tried to kill me twice."
"Not exactly. It's all for show. The community loves it." Anti shrugged, his eyes darting about as he came up with the right words to convey his thoughts properly. Chase found it hard to believe that every time he had made him legitimately fear for his life, Anti was just acting. Still, he could tell Anti had something else he wanted to say. Quickly, Anti's eyes set and he straightened up against the wall. His gaze locked with Chase's and he nodded affirmatively. "Family is family. I don't have to like you to still love you. You're my brother."
