Happily Never After

Once upon a time
I had my happily ever after
I slept in peace
I dreamt of smiles and laughter

Sunlight shimmered softly
As I sprawled out on golden fields of flowers
Dewy grass blades tickled my feet
A brief hundred years felt only hours

Until the first dark day
When thunderous clouds flooded my sky
They washed away my dreams
And struck me to reality

When I opened my eyes
A strange man stood before me
Numb to all of the horrors I could see
His eyes clouded of greed

On one knee, he declared me his wife
From then on, I was sentenced for life
To my happily never after
