I wake up to the sound of soft humming. The tune is so familiar, but I can't put my finger on it. It's a pleasant thing to wake up to after have that terrorizing dream. I lay there for a while as the humming continues. As time goes on, I start to think about who could be the hummer. It definitely isn’t my mother. She hasn’t sung or hummed to me since I was a child. Maybe it could be a nurse waiting for me to wake. I try to open my eyes, but my eyelids are too heavy. I lay there trying to open my eyes when I remember the song. “I don’t know who you are, but you have to be pretty cool to like Ed Sheeran.” I say with a dry and hoarse voice. I hear someone get up rapidly and I hear them walk over to my bed.

“Do you need some ice chips?” the person asks. I thought it was a woman, but unless she has a deep voice and a thick accent, I don’t think so.

“That’d be nice.” I reply. “Who are you? I can’t see anything.”

I hear him breathe. “Let me get a nurse really quick.”

I hear him leave and I start to get anxious. All I can do right now is stay calm. Being stressed has never been a good thing for me, and I don’t want to fall back into that cycle.

A couple of minutes later, I hear footsteps enter the room. “Ms. Simon? Can you hear me?”

“Yeah I can hear you. I sure as hell can’t see you.” I respond. I’m not trying to be rude, but if you wake up from surgery and can’t see, you’d be a little frustrated too.

“Well at least you can still hear us.” I hear her writing something down.

“Can you explain to me why I can’t see anything?” I say a little more calm this time.

“During surgery, the anesthetic had some sort of reaction that wasn’t big enough for the surgeons to notice anything. After the surgery was finished, they noticed hives around your eyes. They were so severe that they had entered your eyelids. We weren’t allowed to remove them since we needed your consent and you were still under. The hives spread more into your eyes and have caused temporary blindness that can last anywhere from a few weeks to many years to come. It all just depends on how your white blood cells fight them off.”

I sit still for a good minute to take in all of this information.

“So these surgeons fucked up my eyes? Fan-fucking-tastic.”  I start to tear up and my eyes burn. “Fuck. They hurt! Give me some medicine or something!” I yell at the nurse.

“Okay.” The nurse replies.

“And don’t forget my ice chips!” I say loud enough for her to hear.

After I hear her leave, I start to cry. Even though my eyes hurt like hell, it feels good to cry.

“Do you want me to leave?” A voice asks.

I wipe my face, and cough out of surprise. “Oh god, I’m sorry you had to see that. Are you the doctor?” I ask the stranger.

He laughs slightly. “I wish. I’m the intern, but you’ve met me before.”

His voice is familiar. Maybe I went to school with him or something.

“If it helps, I was the last guy you kissed.” He chuckles.

My jaw drops. “Zayn? You’re an intern? How?”

“I’ve been working here for a few days now. It’s quite nice actually. I get to meet crazy people like you.” He jokes.

“Ha ha. Very funny.” I snort. “A few days you’ve been here? I thought you were still in that shit hole?”

He laughs and says “No. I was released a day after you left. I guess that I wasn’t crazy enough.”

“Well, you did try to fling yourself off of a bridge.” I laugh.

“That is true. Maybe I need to try a building next time.”

“How about no? I don’t want the guy I last kissed to jump off of a building. I would feel terrible.” I laugh. “How did you even get a internship here?” I ask.

“Oh that? I was kidding. I lied and told them I was your fiancé to get back here. My mum works here and told me about this girl who just went through surgery came from the same place I was at, and so I obviously lied to see your beautiful face again.” He says and pinches my cheek.

“Don’t touch.” I swat his hand away. I would have seen it coming, but MY EYES DON’T WORK. “Wait. So you’re my fiancé?” I ask and wiggle my eyebrows.

He laughs slightly and says “I guess so.”

“Well it’s a good thing I found you attractive.” I state.

“Found?”

“Yeah. It’s been a couple weeks. Who knows what happened to you. Maybe you got into a freak accident and got really ugly.” I joke.

“Oh don’t worry about that. If anything, I’ve gotten better looking. Now I can fix my beautiful hair.” He jokes.

I hear footsteps enter the room. “Here are your ice chips, and I have the medicine that I’ll inject into your I.V.” the nurse says.

“Here. I can give them to her.” I hear Zayn say.

I feel someone’s hands fiddle with my I.V. tubes. Moments later, I start to feel drowsy, and before I know it, I am drifting off in a deep sleep.
