she made minimal eye contact,
although that was to be expected.i held a french vanilla latte,
with the same hands,
that just earlier,
held the shaking girl.i was full of questions,
i was a dam and the water was building up behind it.i let some pass,
nervously asking,
my voice almost shaking.because adelaide was a chair with three legs,
and i did not want to tip her over.and to my growing excitement, she responded.
her smooth voice,
tapping her fingers against the mug. click, click, click.A pattern that my ears accustomed to.
and we held a conversation,
over coffee in a small café,
drinking the warm liquid,
the inviting scent i came to associate her with.after quite some time,
the sky outside the window growing darker,
words becoming less,it was finished,
just like that.and in the short amount of time between rain and darkness,
i learned about the girl, adelaide.her hobbies,
her family,
her number.and not once did the topic come up,
not once did we speak of the pain behind her eyes.and for now,
that'd be okay.so we left it at that.
she walked through those doors with nothing but a simple goodbye.but for me,
that'd be okay.and i felt a pang in my chest,
something strange and new.something else that this new girl gave me.
and it wasn't her number,
it wasn't her name.it was just a feeling.
