Lafayette and I stood by the carriage that led to the battlefield. Gray clouds swarmed in the sky, and the plains of grass swayed in a sorrowing mood.
"I'm so sorry, mi amour. I didn't want to leave you. Not like this."
Lafayette looked down at me, holding my palms in his.
"Don't worry. You'll be back before you know it." I smiled, trying to forget the tears running down my cheeks. He squeezed my hand.
"How about when I get back, we get married and go see the world?" Lafayette said, smiling bright.
I chuckled.
"Yes. I'd like that." I brushed the back of his fluffy hair. "Stay safe for me, okay?"
I stared at him. A look of doubt swept over his face."I can't promise anything." He blinked.
"But promise me you won't get into any trouble while I'm gone?" He flipped the question back at me.
Mocking him, I said, "I can't promise anything."
He laughed, pulling me closer to him.
"I'm going to miss you." I mumbled, leaning on his chest."I'll miss you more." He said, placing his warm lips on mine. I began to feel cold tears running down my cheeks again. It was a final goodbye, and a memory that I would remember for a long time. He held me tightly, as the soft sound of the wind rushed past us.
Lafayette turned, heading to the carriage.
"Au reviour!" He said, stepping into the black, horse-drawn vehicle.
A solem, bittersweet look swept over me, finally realizing that I may never see him again. I kept the image of his smiling face in my head, so I wouldn't lose hope of our time together.
He turned at me, through the moving carriage. He was crying, too.
~The Next Day~
"Eliza, relax. It's nothing to worry about. He'll be fine." I said, encouraging her to stay happy. I'm sure she's feeling anxious, because she's pregnant. Alexander was so caught up in the battle, Eliza was his only escape- and I guess there are consequences to those 'escape nights'. And at times like these, there are barley any doctors left to help birth a child. So, I have nothing to worry about compared to her.
"I dunno, Eliza. Maybe he'll find a new, war-maiden to rub up on." Angelica said, walking into the room with a cup of tea and a plate of cookies. She laughed, mockingly. "As long as I never know about a forbidden romance like that, I'll be fine... as they say, ignorance is bliss." Eliza laughed.
"What if Alexander had been struck in battle? Is ignorance the best, in that case?" I questioned her, right before Angelica whacked me upside the head, so hard, that my head ached wildly. "Do not speak of such things!" She said, scowling at me.
"No. I would like to know if he died or not." Eliza murmured, reaching out for a cookie on the counter. Angelica grabbed her hand. "Ah-ah ah, none of that. Those cookies are for a guest."
Both me and Eliza raised an eyebrow.
"Daddy arranged a meeting. Peggy needs to get married, so her supposed husband will be stopping by any minute now. His name is Stephen Van Rensselar."
Stephen. Really? The preppy, ego-indulging idiot at the end of the street. He was very- very attractive- but his personality was a total wreck.
And marrying him is totally out of the question. Angelica knows I've already got Lafayette-
My thoughts were interrupted by a few light knocks on the door.
