"Hey," I said turning the corner at Waffle House. My mom was in a booth.
"Chanel!" she said smiling getting up to give me a hug. I hugged her back and it made things a little awkward.
We sat down at the booth and a waitress came to take our orders. Once she left we just sat there for a while.
"How have things been going?" she asked me. "I heard about what happened to Emyriah. How's the family?"
It was Sunday afternoon and the day after Will died. I wanted to clear the air with my mom before I turned 18. The sooner the better right?
"Good. They making it through," I said as I saw my dad come through the door. My mom thought that it would be a good idea for him to join us. Behind him I saw Deniece knowing that her coming was not such a good idea.
"Hello Tonya," my dad said.
"Chris," she said dryly.
"I'm Deniece," she said holding out her hand to shake my mom's hand. "I've heard so much about you."
"I'm Tonya," my mom said shaking her hand back. "I haven't heard anything about you. As a matter of fact, who are you?"
Before Deniece could snap back at my mom, my dad said "She's my fiance."
My mom laughed a little to her self. "Well take a seat," she said.
Daddy sat next to my mom while Deniece sat next to me. I could tell she was a little pissed because her face turned red.
"Where's Lailah?" I asked.
"She's with grandma June. She's really been missing you."
"I miss her too. I'm gonna stop by there on my way home," I said.
"Home? Sound like you're not coming back." she said.
"She didn't mean it like that Tonya," dad interrupted.
The waitress came with food and my dad and Deniece just ordered coffee.
"So you gonna be 18 in a couple days. Are you excited?" Deniece asked breaking the silence.
"It's cool and all that. I think it's gonna be overrated though," I said.
"Chanel, we know that for the last week things have been a Lil tense. Today is the day we should put everything out in the open so we can move on and work together so me and your dad can parent you," said my dad.
