It had been seven years since Ursus and her friend Esperanto found the girl. He had been just a fawn and she, just a cub. She could have only been a 24 moons old when we first discovered her. Ursus thought. It had been seven years to the day since she carried the child on her back. Her little hands were sticky from trying to grab honey from a low-hanging beehive, and her skinny legs had been scratched by the prickler bushes. One could tell the human had been fending for herself for a few sunrises. Ursus remembers how her hands pulled at her fur, and how scared she had been carrying her back to her cave. Yet, at the same time, holding her felt..right. She had been spontaneous and decided to keep the creature. Esperanto kept warning her to report the child to the counsel, but Ursus didn't trust them enough to put the child into their hands. She made Esperanto promise not to inform his father of the human, for his dad was the Head Buck of the council and the King of the forest. On top of that fact that his dad had the power to banish her and her family for handling the child, it would finally give his father a reason to get rid of her. Esperanto's dad had always hated that his son was friends with a pack of bears. Even though peace had been made between the small kingdom, his father still feared that they would grow a primitive hunger for his son. Ursus thought this was absurd, she always made sure to hunt outside of the kingdom, yet the king still held a grudge.
Her friend made a promise he kept to this day. A promise that if exposed, would mean potential banishment and dispossession of his soon to be throne. This secret had grown especially fatal now that the young prince was coming of age. Esperanto hadn't realized what this secret meant back then, but now the risks became clearer to him, and he knew it was vital that the girl remained a secret. However, lately it's been getting harder to conceal her the way they used to.
Seven years ago, Esperanto walked Ursus and the human back to her cave. They decided it was the best and only place they could think of the hide the child. Ursus was nervous that her family wouldn't accept the girl, but there was no one else they could trust; especially not Esperanto's father. She told her mother everything that had happened that day and explained how she could not report the human. "Mom, I can't just put the child into the hands of the council! You don't know the kinds on things they could do to her.."
"Ursus, my dear, do you know how dangerous a human can be?"
"Mother, she's just a child! She can barely fend for herself. How could she defend herself from the council?"
"She may be a cub now, but she will grow into a dangerous human! Turning her in will be the right thing to do. The counsel knows how to release her back into civilization properly."
"But mom, how will they return her back to her real family?"
"They will find a way, my Urssy.."
"I can't let you do this. Imagine if I got lost in the civilization?"
Her mother remained quiet.
"They could hurt me, shoot me, and even eat me! That's exactly what the council could do. They could hurt her."
"That would be unbearable to me. My only daughter...being-being, killed!"
"Please mother, we need to take care of her or at least find away to return her to the right family."
"We will not be going into the human's world!"
"Then I guess we keep her." Ursus said calmly.
"I guess we will have to.." Her mother solemnly agreed.
Ursus and Esperanto exchanged a quiet smile of victory.
Since that day Ursus's brothers, father, mother, and grand parents accepted the human as their own. They named her Fera Puer, meaning wild child. Fera, for short. From then on, she became one with the wilderness.
