Tails and Dark Oak floated there face to face, paying attention to each other's frowning eyes. Their fists clenching tight as they waited for the other to make the first act. Tails' fur was gently waving from the energies within him; upon this, he looked weightless, and from the look on his face you could see he had no fear.

"Do you have any idea how much power I possess?" Dark Oak boasted, "You're just a mere obstacle on a training course. Now step aside."
"I'm afraid I can't let you pass." Tails exclaimed hovering in Dark Oak's way from the sun. Dark Oak just gave him a cold look, and then opened up his hand, and with his dark aura he created a sword of darkness.

Standing fearless and strong, Tails' heart filled with Cosmo's warmth, encouraging him to stand for the sake of all existence. He closed his eyes and extended his arm; a light extended from his own hand, forming a sword of pure light. He knew what had to be done. Dark Oak had to fall, or life's existence would vanish.

At the sight of Tails' sword, Dark Oak held his in front of him offensively with a chuckle in his throat.
"Foolish."
"Dark Oak..." Tails' announcement echoed through the space around them as his bright sword rose up to point at his target, "I have to put you to an end. You must fall."
"The sun will fall before I do." Dark Oak promised, dashing toward Tails at an immense speed, preparing to strike his sword at Tails. Tails closed his eyes as he heard the ringing noise of Dark Oak's blade slicing through the air toward him, and instantaneously moved his sword in the way stopping it in its tracks with a loud clash. Tails slowly opened his frowning eyes, staring deeply into Dark Oak's. Tails pulled his sword away for a brief moment, then swung his sword toward Dark Oak's sword. When the two swords collided, Dark Oak's sword disintegrated into black sparks of energy, leaving him without a weapon.

Dark Oak repelled backward to flee from Tails. He only showed a few moments of terror in his eyes, but his scared expression slowly turned into grinning chuckles, which those chuckles soon turned into evil laughing.
"You can't beat me. I am immortal!" he boasted.

Tails remained afloat deep in thought. As much as he was afraid to admit it, Dark Oak was right. The only way pure darkness can be destroyed is if it is countered with pure light. Dark and Light alike are both indestructible, unless destroyed by each other. With a moment of thought, Tails knew what had to be done. The light in which surrounded him began to glow brighter, and soon he was too bright for Sonic to see.

"Tails, what are you doing?" Sonic asked shielding his eyes.
"Sonic. Leave, now." Tails said once again to the stubborn hedgehog.
"I'm not leaving, Tails!"
Tails looked at Sonic for a few moments, and knew there wasn't much of a chance he could make Sonic flee. He nodded to Sonic's remarks and turned back to Dark Oak.

"Sonic. Tell everyone that life is worth living." Tails exclaimed through an echoing voice, "There will always be good and bad things coming our way, but if you don't give life a chance, you'll never have a chance to see the good things in life. And to give everybody this chance to discover the true meanings of life, I have no choice but to give all of you my own."
"Tails??"

In a flash of light, Tails' body charged into Dark Oak and absorbed into his body.
"What?! What is happening?!" Dark Oak panicked feeling sharp pains through his body. His body began to expose cracks in which light was shining out of. He held onto his chest and his body curled up trying to withstand the pain.

"Tell them." Tails' voice echoed into Sonic's ears. With that final remark, Dark Oak exploded in a flash of pure light.
"Tails, no!!" Sonic shielded his eyes again from the blast. When the explosion finally cleared he turned to see what had happened.

They were gone. Dark Oak and Tails have vanished. Sonic continued to look around, but to his disbelief he didn't see anybody. He felt a cold chill through his spine realizing that he was alone here, and that Tails had died to destroy Dark Oak.

"T..Tails you can't be gone!" Sonic shouted flying around the area looking for him. "Where are you?!"
As much as Sonic hollered for Tails, his voice was unheard. He remained still, floating in the spot, his fists clenching to his sides, and his eyes filled with sorrow. He lowered his head closing his eyes bidding his friend good bye.
"Good bye... Tails..."

......
Sonic returned back to Angel Island returning the Chaos Emeralds to Knuckles.
"Sonic, did you stop him?" Knuckles wondered.
Sonic didn't have a response. He just lowered his head and turned the other way to walk into the forest.
"Sonic? What happened?" Knuckles asked again receiving no response from Sonic. He felt he knew that Sonic needed to be alone so he let Sonic leave.

Sonic wandered deep into the forest walking slowly looking up at the trees around him. He climbed to the highest view point on a hilltop where there perched a tree. He approached the tree and sat down under it leaning on his hands lying on his back looking up at the swaying leaves.

Still broken inside about what had happened, he remained lying there watching the tree with nothing to say or think.
"Don't be sad, Sonic." He heard Tails' voice echo through the wind. Sonic's ears perked and he sat up looking around.
"Tails?"
Tails' voice took a moment to respond, but he was still unseen, "It had to be done."
"Where are you?" Sonic asked.

Suddenly before Sonic stood Tails and Cosmo. They were smiling and holding hands. However, they were transparent.
"I... I can see through you..." Sonic stuttered, "Are you two ghosts?"
Tails and Cosmo nodded slowly disappointedly. Tails approached Sonic and placed his hand on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry I had to go, Sonic. It was the only way to save the lives of everyone else. But... I'm happy." Tails exclaimed with a smile.
"H...happy?" Sonic muttered.
"I'm happy that you and everyone else have a second chance to live. Cosmo and I are together again in peace and harmony. Even though I can't stay here with you, I will always be here."
Sonic took a few moments to finally show a smile, "Well... I'm glad that you're happy Tails. And I understand..."

Tails smiled and held out his hand to Sonic. Sonic accepted his hand, and Tails lifted him onto his feet and shook his hand.
"Thank you, Sonic, for everything. You've raised me like a brother would."
Sonic smiled and nodded with a few sudden tears, "Anything, bro."
"Take care of everyone for me."
"I promise I will..." Sonic vowed holding his hand to his heart. Tails nodded and gave him one more smile before he turned back to Cosmo.
"Fare well, Sonic." Tails said as he took Cosmo's hand. They both looked back at Sonic one last time as they turned the other way and began to walk away from him, and vanished.

Sonic stood there in silence and waited.
"Tell them, Sonic." He heard Tails' voice again through the wind.
"I will..." Sonic answered. With that last remark, he sped off through the forest to fulfill Tails' wishes to protect the galaxy.
