"Let's go get cotton candy!!" "Can we go on the Farris Wheel?!" "Let's go into the fun house!" "Can we get food?!" "I want to take a picture with the clowns!" "Ooh look at the animals!"
Yes the annual carnival was back and everyone was excited. How could you not be excited when it featured animals, games, rides, clowns, food, and prizes? The Huntington Beach carnival was no joke and it offered everything you could ever want. Kids were screaming and laughing and parents were eating and talking excitedly.
But there were two things that attracted the crowds the most. The Clown Tent and the Fun House. There were always lines for these two attractions. How could you not love watching clowns do tricks and interacting with all the children?
It was after a showing and all the people were walking out of the tent to go to another ride. After each showing, the clowns roamed around the fair and delighted all the little children. The fortunate thing was that the fair closed for the night 30 minutes after the last showing. So people had plenty of time to talk to the clowns before they were ushered out.
A group of three children, all between the ages of 3-6, were talking to Patches and laughing in glee. The fair was just about to close down and it was late at night. Their parents were trying to get them away from the clown so that they could go home but the children refused.
"Come here children! Patches has a present for you!" Patches said to the children before hopping into the empty fun house. The children ran after him but lost the clown in the house.
"Clown! Where?" April, the youngest, said with her lisp.
"I don't know April! Let's continue to look" Niki said while pulling her two younger siblings. April was 3, Jaden was 5, and Niki was the very responsible 6 year old.
"Hey guys! I saw him go around the corner!" Jaden yelled while pointing to the mirror maze section. April squealed in delight and ran into the maze, quickly disappearing from the olders' eyesight.
"April wait for us!" Niki yelled and pulled Jaden along to catch up with her.
"N-Niki? W-where's the way out?" Jaden asked with a trembling voice. Niki grabbed his hand and continued to pull him along, her other hand feeling across the wall. The bright lights that illuminated the maze went out with a buzz.
"Niki! Maybe we should wait for April instead!" Niki didn't answer and dropped Jaden's hand to use both hands against the wall. Starting to cry, Jaden lifted a weak hand against the other wall to help Niki. They slowly continued their pursuit until Niki pressed against the wall too hard and it broke, revealing a dark room. There were no lights in the room except for one purple one that was shining on the wall. It made the fun house even more scary if that was even possible.
"Oh! April we have visitors!" April squealed and hugged Patches. Niki and Jaden ran over and laughed, happy that their sister wasn't lost.
"Me found Pathes! Pathes make me laugh!" April shouted with her little lisp.
"Aha! Jaden, and Niki, come with Patches! Patches will show you wonders!" Patches said while walking through a turning tunnel. Niki hugged April and fixed her ponytail.
"Stay here until we come back ok?" April nodded and played with the purple light, pretending to make ponies with the shadows. She turned around to see the fading backs of her two older siblings.
She giggled when her shadow pony flashed across the entire wall. She played with the light some more, but she soon got bored. It's been like 15 minutes and none of them had come back yet.
After about 30 minutes, she decided to see what they're doing without her. She stumbled along the path and came to a big door. Using all her strength, April managed to push the heavy door. Sliding though, she blinked her eyes to get used to the bright lights.
"Ah! You came!" Patches said after quickly covering a big lump with a black tarp. April nodded and walked over to the table. She pointed and looked up to the clown.
"What in here?" She asked while reaching for the corner to peek. The clown smiled with joy and walked next to April.
"Why don't you lift it up and find out?" He said with a frozen voice. April lifted the corner and screamed. She covered eyes and cried loudly. She kept screaming into her hand while Patches watched with content.
"Jaden! Niki! Red and cut up! What happened!" The poor 3 year old screamed, choking on tears.
"Do you want to see what happened little April?" She uncovered her eyes and screamed at the clown, her tiny fists balling at her sides.
"NO GET AWAY YOU STUPID!" She ran into the turning tunnel and fell but recovered quickly. Patches ran after her with his rusty knife in hand. April did well until the mirror maze. She got all turned around and with her muddled brain, getting through was impossible. After relentless times of trying, she was surrounded by the horrifying reflection of Patches. No matter where she turned, there he was, holding his dripping knife with a sinister smile.
April hid her face in her knees and hugged them tightly. She cried and screamed for help. She was mid-scream when she choked and coughed up blood. She knelt over and clutched the blade of the knife that went through her stomach. She brought up a bloody hand to wipe her tears, but ended up spreading the blood. She collapsed on the ground and writhed against the blade. The last thing she heard was a psychotic laugh and her vision flickered out. She gave up and laid her head down on the red stained ground. The ringing in her ears stopped, the buzzing in her brain stopped, and the beating in her heart stopped.
