"Hope is the only thing stronger than fear."

Daisy Clark P.O.V.

Heavy metal music keeps blaring over the car radio, and I'm just waiting for Troy to turn it off... But he doesn't, so I turn it off as we reach the gates of a ranch. This will be our new home for a while... at least I hope so.

"Joe." Troy says, rolling down the window to the guard.

"Man, who'd you piss off the draw guard again, huh? Your father wants to talk to you." Joe says.

"Jake already talk to him?" Troy asks him, I keep playing around with the cards Troy has inside the car. He didn't mind when I took them.

"Jake ain't here. That's the thing, he ain't been here since he left. He's overdue." Joe replies.

"All right, all right, get out. Get out of the truck." Troy instructs us, making my attention go back to these people.

"What?" My mom says.

"Get out of the truck and wait outside. Now, come on, get out. Joe, watch them." Troy commands, my mom,  and Nick get out.

"Even me?" I wonder.

"Get out." I shrug it off, getting out the car.

"Change the bandage tonight." I point out as I close the door, he turns on the engine and drives inside. Joe closes the gate, leaving us outside.

"They're not here." Mom says.

"Let's just backtrack and find them." Nick offers.

"Backtrack to where? We don't know where they are." Mom says.

"You don't know where you're going." I point out, looking around. We're in the middle of nowhere. Nada!

"Better than goddamn waiting." Nick snaps at me.

"No, it's not." I argue back.

"We leave, get lost. They show up, then what? They have to go find us. Overreact now could get us killed. Okay." Mom explains our point.

"And what if they don't show? Right? What if it is just you, Daisy and me? What's the play then?" Nick wonders, mom walks up to him.

"Hug your mother. Just do it now. Do it." They hug and I stay away, knowing she probably has a gun. Damn, I should have stole one.

"Armed patrol at the gate here. Perimeter watch on the ridge. But most of these folks are civilians." Mom says.

"Well, we are not civilians, okay? We do not need this place. We don't need these people." Nick is so stubborn!

"Nick, we need someone to treat your girlfriend." I tell him, then I turn around and lay down.

Yeah, now I remember why I left.

I open my eyes slightly and see mom talking to someone from the other side of the gate. I groan as I sit up.

"Joseph, the gate." I hear the old guy say, I jump in excitement, standing up.

"Welcome to Broke Jaw Ranch." He says.

"It's not safe." Nick whispers.

"Right now we're just two families with missing loved ones." Mom whispers her reply.

"I don't trust these people."

"Well don't trust them. Trust me." At this point, I'm not even going to lose my energy in trying to argue with my own family.
