"Don't underestimate me. I know more than I say, think more than I speak, & notice more thank you realize."

Daisy Clark P.O.V.

"I was in the dining room dry-canning some beans when an angel fell from the damn sky and crashed in my backyard. I screamed and ran out there. And there she was, all of 12, a lump on the ground, holding on to a giant lawn umbrella. She had jumped off the roof. Thought the thing would hold her. She broke her arm in two places, but she never cried. Charlene embodied the spirit of this place An always-ready, never-quit, get-it-right-this-time spirit. And she would have if she wasn't risking her life for the unprepared." Pat says, that was actually a very lovely story.

"Pat, thank you." Jake says.

"Hello. I just want to introduce my family. I'm Madison Clark, and these are my children, Nick, Daisy and Alicia.  We wanted to offer our condolences for Charlene and for the others you lost. We've lost loved ones, too. Travis. Travis, he was our compass, and he- We just wanted to say thank you for sheltering us and thank you for your generosity. We will repay it. Thank you." Mom says before she sits back down beside Alicia.

"We've all lost. We share that. And grieving's hard, but it's important that we process it-" Jake gets cut off by a guy who looks to be around 50 of so.

"More important to prepare, Jake. I'm sorry. There is a time and place for mourning, and Patty is owed that. But who brought down the helicopter?" They old guy says.

"We aim to find out, Vernon." Jake tries to reassure him.

"When?" Vernon asks.

"We're gonna get to the bottom of this." Jake says.

"What's your timeline?Jeremiah, please." Vernon says.

"Nothing's changed, Vernon. Make no mistake, we're in a wartime posture here. We tasked Alpha Station to scout the crash site. When we know what we're dealing with, we'll act. If it's some wing nut, we'll act. If it's a larger challenge, we will act." Jeremiah explains.

"Payback, Vernon.Yeah! That's what my father means. Whatever this threat is, large or small, we will make this right." Troy adds to the conversation, not making eye contact with me. He actually took the white bandage out already.

"Hey, we'll mete out justice when we know what it is we're dealing with. We can't afford to lose ourselves. We're more than a mob. We have to be something hopeful in this world. Like my father says, if you plan for the future Plan for a better one." Jake says, not paying attention to what Troy is saying.

Everyone left to the Mess hall, which I now found out is what I call the small open cafeteria. I like my saying better, thought.

"I'm grabbing something from the cabin, I'll meet you soon." I tell my family.

I finally make eye contact with him, pointing with my head to meet me over at his place. Technically I'm just moving my head the direction to his one story house. He nods and walks that way, I rush to my cabin and grab the small cream container and walk over to his little house.

"Hello?" I say as I walk in, without knocking again.

I freeze when I see Jake.

"Just giving this to Troy." I kind of lie, Jake shakes off what he was thinking about and leaves. Hopefully it didn't seem weird to him that I was coming here.

I take Jake off my mind, walking into his room. Troy quickly closes his notebook, turning towards me.

"Didn't think you would be taking off the bandage any time soon." I joke around, he chuckles and sits down in his bed and not his desk. I walk in front of him, positioning myself in-between his legs.

I open the small container and put a bit in my finger.

"My mom doesn't likes me being with you, so I'm being a small ninja here." I explain as I put it on his small two cuts.

"I'm a bad guy for them." He mumbles, looking down. I grab his face in my hand, pulling it up for him to look at me. I'm not worried about how close we are, or that I protect him more than I did with my old boyfriend or any of my family. I'm not sure but he's just a person that took a space in my heart very quickly, without me even wanting him.

"Not for me, you didn't do anything bad." I try to assure him, I don't really know what he did and I don't want to know either.

I let go off his face as I close the container, cleaning my hand with my jeans.

"What happened to your boyfriend?" He wonders.

"Nothing, he's still alive and somewhere. I don't know really, and I don't really want to see him either." I confess.

"You don't love him?"

"Not anymore." Why am I even telling him this?

He had left me with those people, knowing exactly what would happen. He did nothing to help!

"I should actually get going for lunch." I awkwardly say, I start turning around but he grabs hold of my waist. I look up at him with a confuse look.

"What are you doing?" I ask as he steps closer to me, okay this is weird but not as weird that I want him to kiss him. God.

"Nothing." He says, letting go of my waist.

"I have to go." I whisper, rushing out.

That's weird.

I enter the cabin to see Alicia, Nick, and mom.

"They don't want us here." Nick says.

"Most of them don't mind. The ones who do, we win them over." Mom explains it to us as I put away the container.

"You want to win over Troy?" I wonder, taking a sit on my bunk.

''Work in progress. In the meantime, the three of you stay away from him. Especially you, Daisy." Mom instruct us.

"Not sure I can do that." I mumble under my breath.

"You don't know what sets him off. He doesn't know what sets him off." Mom says, mainly at me.

"Okay, but if we stay, we need to do something." Nick says, what the hell? What does he means?

"What does that mean? I'm doing something." Mom says, confused as me.

"No, what do you mean, Nick? What are you gonna do? Do you want my knife? You gonna do something?" Alicia says, taking out her knife.

"All I'm saying is that we should start over somewhere else, okay? Like find a house, grow crops. We don't have to stay here, that's all." Nick replies.

"Farming's more your style." Nick adds, pointing at me.

"We're not leaving." Mom says.

"Why?Why are you so convinced that this is the place, Mom?" Nick asks.

"Because it's all we have. Because there's no place better. Because we hauled you out of that hell hole and Travis died because of it." Mom replies.

After out chat, I walk towards the gate just to observe everything.

"Watch, I'm going to the bathroom." The soldier tells me.

"Okay." I mumble, he leaves and I'm just in the look out but playing around... Until there's a person with a horse, coming here. I inspect the person closer, because he did look similar.

"Joshua."
