The year is 1823. Fantine a single mother is struggling to work so she can send money to her little toddler Hayley. She works day and night at a factory. Five years ago she had given everything to a man who had left her alone with a child and no money. She was forced to give her child Hayley to some innkeepers and sent money to them via mail. As Fantine worked in the factory the foreman kept trying to hit on her. Brushing him off she continued on her work. Suddenly a letter was sent to by the mailmen, from the innkeepers.

In a flash, one of the nosy woman who worked at the factory snatched the letter and read it aloud. " Dear Fantine, Hayley is sick and needs a doctor. Please send five francs." At this, the foreman and the rest of the factory were shocked at the scandal Fantine had caused. They kicked her out of the factory, leaving her stricken with no job. Crying, Fantine muttered "I dreamed a dream in time gone by. But now life has killed the dream I dreamed."

In desperation, she cut off her hair and sold it. With nothing left to sell, she was convinced to enter prostitution by others in similar situations. "Don't they know they're making love to one already dead!" said Fantine. As she worked as a prostitute a man started harassing her and attempted to punch her. As Fantine punched back police inspector Javert saw this sight and attempted to put Fantine in jail. However, Jean Valijean, who had assumed a fake identity and had become mayor pledged to help Fantine.

Javert, who had been trying to arrest Jean Valijean finally figured out that the mayor for some many years had been him all along. He set out to arrest Jean but when he arrived he found Jean pledging to find Fantine's daughter as Fantine lay on her deathbed. She had extracted a disease from living so long in the coldness of this Earth. Jean narrowly escaped Javert and set off to find Hayley.
