Jean set off to find Hayley, ultimately finding her at an inn that was owned by the corrupt Thenaridiers. The Thenardiers had lied, telling Fantine that they needed money to pay for medical expenses. Instead, they spent the money on themselves and made Hayley live a life of poverty. Hayley was forced to sweep the floors and was slapped, while the Thenardiers' daughter Eponine was give dolls and toys. One day, Hayley was forced to walk to a well in the middle of the wood during the pitch black night.
Frightened, Hayley talked to herself as she walked. "There is a Castle on a Cloud, I like to go there in my sleep. Not any floors for me to sweep, not in my castle on a cloud." As she walked to the well Jean approached her, he gently brought her back to the Thenardiers. He was forced to haggle with them as they did not want to give away free housework.
Finally, Jean was able to adopt Hayley. They bought a carriage and headed to Paris. Hayley with a loving and caring father at last.
