Breathless

Ember sat up in the cave and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. She looked around and focused her gaze on the small pit of coals situated a few feet from her. In a few seconds a small stream of smoke drew up from the still-hot coals, but nothing more. The fire spirit sighed in frustration before holding her hand above it, concentrating hard on the coals. When that didn't work, she blew a steady stream of fire from between her lips, lighting the coals instantly.

After shifting her attention on a small pile of kindling, it stirred and she guided it slowly with her finger, setting it up above the burning coals. The fire grew quickly and spread flickering light within the cave. Ember smiled to herself, thinking about her powers.

She sat there for a while, busying herself with sharpening her single arrow, and re-stringing her bow. After a while she whispered to her fire, and it was out in a few seconds. She stood, securing her bow to her back, and her arrow along it's string.

She wore a black skin-tight undershirt with a velvet-type vest, that overlapped itself to zip up her left side . Her black jeans had holes all the way down the front of her legs, but were frayed as if burned rather than torn. She had black combat boots that only went to her ankles. Her hair wasn't red, as you'd expect with her powers. Instead, it was a very pure and light blonde, far from yellow, but no where near platinum. The best part of her was her eyes. They changed based on her mood, but the common color was a vibrant, dominating scarlet (weird, right?). She stepped out of the cave into a world of white, the snow melting below her feet.

She took a deep breath before jumping as hard as her legs allowed. She watched the workshop fade into view as momentum flew her higher into the air. Her ascent was slowing and she called upon her wings. They were made entirely of fire and took the shape of butterfly wings.

Ember disappeared into the clouds before the flames drew any attention to her, and took of to hunt. After flying for a while, she spotted a wave of the northern lights in the distance.

"Crap!" She cursed, putting out her wings and allowing herself to freefall. Anything to stay hidden... Ember thought as she plunged into the icy-black waters of the arctic ocean.

She crawled onto land and hid in an alcove. She desperately tried to calm herself, as the ice was melting around her, heat rising from her nervous body. The snow dripped onto her forehead and soaked through her clothes. There was a sudden wind, and a reflection of the tooth fairy passed by the water at her toes. As soon as it was out of sight, she let out the air she'd been holding in her lungs.

"two hundred and fifty years of hiding and so many close calls it's not even funny..." She whispered. Crawling out from the alcove. She had to stay low, wait for the guardians to leave.

But there was a problem. She was curious...

"Why now?" She said to no one in particular. She had kept hidden, only venturing out of her cave for food. Though every once in a while she'd have a dream that convinced her to go outside. She knew who gave her the dreams, and it definitely wasn't sandman.

She raised her eyebrow at the moon. Sandman had no idea she existed, and neither did the other guardians. It was the moon that sent her these dreams. He had told her to stay hidden, not letting anyone know that she was there. She was fine with that, being alone hadn't bothered her.

She decided that walking was the best bet, instead of drawing attention to herself by using her wings. After a while the workshop came back into view. The moon sent a beam of light into the open skylight, and she looked up. She felt him urging her forward. She gasped in realization.

"A new guardian..." She whispered. The moon wanted her to see. It wanted her to know who it was.

She flew as fast as she could to the workshop, avoiding the windows and creeping in through an open one in another room. She had seen Jack frost attempt this, but his frost was always a dead giveaway. She silently thanked Manny for not leaving scorch marks everywhere she touched.

She 'sheathed' her wings and climbed into the rafters, taking off her shoes to allow for quiet steps and leaving them outside the window. She navigated the beams expertly, after training herself in parkour in the desolate forests of Russia for many years. She had learned a lot in her time alone. Including knife-throwing, free climbing, and MMA. None has come into use since she doesn't encounter other people...ever.

She mad it to the globe room and sat near a window, keeping out of sight of the four guardians talking below. She heard North and Bunnymund arguing about their holidays, and noticed Sandy trying to get their attention.

She suppressed a giggle as he became frustrated and had to grab an elf by the hat and shake it vigorously, causing the bell on his hat to jingle. He pointed to  the moon, which was shining ever-so-brightly into the room. Ember watched a large crystal ascend out of the floor. Blue dust rose from the crystal, forming an image. She leaned forward to get a closer look. Her foot slipped of the edge and she had to cling to the beam to keep from falling. Luckily the guardians were to busy watching the crystal to notice her frightened squeak.

"Jack frost" She heard north say. At this she looked up, trying to spot the image. She widened her eyes in shock.

"There's no way..." She completely ignored the guardians and swung to right above the crystal. Sure enough, the image showed the frost spirit, clear as day. Tooth said something that Ember couldn't catch, and Bunny replies:

"Jack frost! He doesn't care about children, all he does is freeze waterfronts and mess with my egg hunts. right? He's an irresponsible, selfish-" North cuts him off.

"Guardian..." He says, nodding in approval. Sandy locks eyes with Ember and she ducked behind the beam. She holds her breath, but they just keep talking amongst each other. She quickly made her way out of the workshop without being seen again.

"What do I do now?" She whispered, looking up at the moon. She was leaning against the outside wall of the workshop, her shoes laying in the snow beside her. She felt solid ground and realized all the snow within a 3 foot radius had melted. After slipping her shoes on she returned to her cave. She suddenly felt her eyelids being tugged downward.

Sleep... Whispered a voice

"Sleep...I have to sleep..." She collapsed onto her bed, not bothering to take off her bow or shoes.

All will be explained.... She heard just before drifting into darkness.

Hope you enjoyed!
