Chapter Eighteen ~ Amity

Annie was crying. Silent tears cascaded down her freckled pale cheeks as Charlotte and I followed her down the winding staircase, leading to the depths of the secret basement. I couldn't see them, but I knew they were there by the way she sniffled and occasionally wiped her nose.

"We're almost there,"Annie called, her voice thick emotion.

I would never understand Annie Casanova. What goes on in her head was a mystery to me. Her thoughts, emotions, and actions contradicted each other, and just thinking about it gave me a headache. I wasn't sure to hold her close and comfort her or keep my distance, alert if she would try to do anything.

The wooden floorboard creaked underneath my feet as I settled on the ground, behind Charlotte and Annie. I took a scan of my surroundings. The basement was surprisingly just like the above floor- full of winding hallways and doors.

"When we found this base we decided to use this level for storage instead how we use the above floor. Some of these rooms are full boxes, carrying all kinds of things," Annie explained taking hesitant steps through the hallway.

We followed her, our eyes grazing over the cobwebs, hanging from the ceilings, and the rats speeding across the ground. This whole place was packed with dust, and I sneezed multiple times. I glanced over towards Charlotte, noticing how her face had paled considerably, and there was a slight tremble in her hands.

"Are you okay, Charlotte." I whispered, floating closer to her.

Her eyes stayed focus on the back of Annie's head, but she nodded slowly. "I feel a little sick, but once we're out of here, we will be fine," she whispered back, her voice low enough that Annie couldn't hear from where she walked ahead.

"I'm scared," I replied, suddenly. "Not for myself, but for Colt, Dakota,Chase, and everyone else. I don't want them to get hurt. It would be all my-."

"Don't you dare finish that sentence, Amity. None of this is your fault. How could we blame you for Harley going all psycho on you? If we are blaming anyone, its the Fates. Their cruel and sick."

I didn't respond; just turned my head meekly, and trudged on, my eyes still flickering up briefly to watch Charlotte. She seemed slower and tired. I couldn't blame her though. Today definitely was eventful, and it had just started. I flinched as a shower of dust and dirt came over us from the ceiling. Shouts and growls had gotten louder, and I knew that my pack had finished permeating though the base.

"Amity," Charlotte faintly called before a loud thump shattered the somewhat eerie silence of the basement.

Startled, I sharply turned to my right to find Dakota, lying in a heap on the ground, her body trembling violently, and her mouth moving swiftly. She was whispering something, that I couldn't quite hear, but I wasn't that concerned about that. I dropped to the ground, panicked.

"Charlotte, what's wrong!" I asked, frantically, shaking her arm.

Annie quickly pushed my hands aside. "Amity, stand back, and let me look at her."

I nodded, mutely, my eyes wide as a dear. I watched amazed as Annie placed her hand on top of Charlotte's sweating forehead, and bowed down until her ear was next to Charlotte's ear. After what seemed like forever, Annie wrapped Charlotte's arm around her neck, and tightened her own arm around Chatlotte's waist. Pulling her limp body of the ground, Annie motioned with her head down the hallway., beckoning me to continue on.

"Chase," Annie said as we took the first few steps down another cold, dark hallway. "Something is wrong with him, and their bond is weakening."

I shut my eyes tight at the news. Please be alright, Chase. I couldn't function if I knew something bad happened to Chase. He needed to be alright.

Abruptly, Annie was throwing her body towards mine, ordering me to get in the room next to her. Shocked, I blindly followed her directions, and thrust the nearest door open, and threw myself into it. Annie followed suit, dragging Charlotte with her. As fast as lightning, Annie place Charlotte's quivering form on a rusty bed, draped with a thin blanket, and locked the door.

"What's wrong!" I all but screamed.

"Quiet," Annie whispered harshly. "He'll hear you."

My body froze, one again another icy feeling shooting through my veins.

"Who?"

"You know! Him. Harley. I can smell him. I don't know how long he's been down here, but he can smell us too, so we don't have much time."

"We can't stay here, and wait for him to get us. What do we do?" I asked, tears resurfacing.

Annie's mouth opened and closed multiple times, thinking of a plan or a suitable answer. Stressed, she ran her fingers though her matted hair.

"I don't know, Amity. I thought, I thought..." she trailed off, pacing around the room.

I smelt him now. A dirty and metallic smell of blood permeated though my nose. His scent was wafting closer, and tears came to my eyes from the unbearable grotesque aroma. My hands flew to my mouth as I bit back the urge to vomit. Suddenly, a voice cut through the silence, bringing goodebumps to my skin.

"Where are you, my precious girls?"
