Chapter Nineteen

My numb fingers gripped Annie's thin arm, leaving crescent moons etched in her skin from my nails. She didn't flinch though; her eyes were glued on the door, waiting for Harley.

I've never known what people on death row felt like, but I think I might understand now. I felt like my end was slowly coming at me, taunting me. There was a cold sweat on forehead, and my hands were shaking violently. I felt myself on a verge of a panic attack, but I forced it down. I wasn't going to leave Annie even more vulnerable. This was my moment to be strong. Charlotte was unreachable now, her mind off somewhere else, worrying about the health of her mate. I could keep myself together.

Wiping my sweat palm down the nightgown, I unlatched my death like grip from Annie.

"I have a plan," I whispered, taking a calm breaths.

Annie looked at me as if I was crazy. "There is no point, Amity. Harley always win. Just give up."

I stared at Annie. She had changed so much when I first met her during the pack barbecue. She was lively, talkative, and so determined. Her once blue eyes that held a sparkle of mischief were dull and void of any life currently. Instead of her wild curly hair that seemed to be untamable , she had thin locks that hung low around her head. She looked dead.

"Annie," I begged, my voice desperate,"do this for us. This is our only chance left. I won't ever forgive you if you don't try."

Annie finally met my gaze. Her eyes were brimming with unshed tears, and her nose was a furious red. Sighing heavily, she rubbed the tears from her eyes, roughly.

"What's the plan."

"Where is she?" my monotone voice asked Dakota.

She didn't respond at first; her calculating eyes were still focused on the dead body of Roxie. Her neck was twisted at an odd angle, and her eyes were open and unseeing. I quickly glanced at Dakota's hands, coated in blood and shaking.

"Was that your first kill?"

Dakota nodded mutely, all of her movements stiff. She crouched down slowly, and reached her hand out towards Roxie's still body. She put her fingers over her eyelids, and shut them. Once she did, all of her muscles relaxed and a sigh escaped Dakota's body.

I glanced down the hallway. There were holes in the walls and droplets of blood splatterd across the tile floor. The fight might of eneded here, but it sure didn't start here.

"How is Chase? Did you see him?" Dakota's asked, her voice strained.

"He's dead or close to it," I answered bluntly.

A strangled gasp sounded from Dakota, and she bit into her hand to prevent from crying out. I looked away briefly, not wanting to see another pack member in pain. After a minute or so, Dakota stood back up, a look of determination etched on her face.

"Annie led Charlotte and Amity to the basement. Apparently, that is where the only safe exit is," Dakota said, answering my question from earlier.

"You left my mate and sister with that traitor!" I barked angirly, my body threatening to go into another shift.

Dakota rolled her eyes at me before sauntering back down the torn hallway. Her fists clenching, Dakota said,"I'm not stupid, Colt. Annie confuses me too, but for now she's trying to help us, and she's the only one who know all the information."
