"Mom, I want to join the relief crew," I say.
"There's no one out there to releive," Mom says, her voice heavy with sadness.
"But Phoenix is."
"Leo, it's been a whole year. She couldn't have survived, and even if she survived the initial war she's dead by now."
"She's not dead! I know it, I can feel it. She's not! She can't be. She's out there and she needs help like everyone else. She needs us! She's alive!"
"She's dead, Leo! Just like everyone else. She's gone. Even if she wasn't there's no way to land on Earth. It's covered in ash, not to mention we have no way of telling if the surface is still radioactive or not. The air hasn't cleared it's not safe! She's gone, they're gone, we have to move on," Mom's in tears now. She's upset that Phi is gone, but she thought of Miracle and Mairead as her own too. Mairead and Phi have been together since the beginning, and then she met Miraxle in college, they were room mates. I hope they made it too. Phi is alive. She has to be.
