Rushing into the locker room, I yanked on the door, only to find it locked. I attempted to open it several more times before I gave up and ran out. A few girls entered the little mini hallway to the locker room, stopped, and waited. I waited just outside the crooked entrance, which swerved into the hallway, avoiding making myself be seen.

A couple more girls entered. None of them looked familiar. Worried, I ran my fingers through my hair, which I’ve been doing a lot lately, and bit my lip. Voices appeared. A few more girls entered. Only several more girls could fit in the dainty hallway. My foot tapped. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Giggles erupted in the hallway. Looking back, one of them was blushing as the rest of the girls laughed at her. I shook my head.

“Hey, Kat,” I heard. Swiftly turning my head, I found Maria smiling at me as she entered the locker room hallway.

“Maria! There you are!” I said, grabbing her arm harder than I liked to and yanking her towards the second door of the locker room that split the hall in two.

“I need help,” I told her. She stared at me with a blank expression on her face.

“With what?” she asked me. At that, I grabbed the crumpled note from my bag and showed it to her. She read it carefully, her eyes analyzing every detail of the note. Suddenly, her face erupted in a grin.

“Is this from who I think it is?” she asked cautiously. I nodded. She squealed and began to jump up and down in excitement, engulfing me in an embrace that was hard to break.

“Oh Kat! I’m so happy for you!” she screamed. Confused, I tried to push her off. As I did so, she looked at me with those large eyes of hers.

“You finally got him! After all that time, I thought you were never gonna get him, but boy, did you prove me wrong!” she continued. Even more thoroughly confused, I placed a hand on my hip in frustration.

“What the... What are you talking about?”

She waved the note in my face, hopping up and down in joy.

“This! I can’t believe Jack asked you for your number!” she replied. A couple of the girls stared at us in bewilderment. Panicking, I grabbed the note from Maria’s hand and took a firm grasp on her arm to get her to stop talking loudly.

“Maria!” I whispered loudly, sending her a death stare. She stopped hopping and hunched down like I did to hear me.

“This wasn’t from Jack. It was from Jake,” I told her. Her eyes widened, and she clasped her mouth with her left hand.

“Jake? But... what would he want with a girl like you?” she asked. Trying not to be offended, I shrugged.

“Beats me. But he wants something, that’s for sure,” I said. Maria noted what I hinted at and swallowed hard. She straightened herself out.

“Did you... give it to him?” she asked. I burst out laughing.

“Oh, hell no,” I said, and Maria began to laugh with me. The bell rang. The doors were still locked. I slipped the note back into my bag.

“I just don’t know what to do,” I said, “I don’t want to talk to him because I’m scared he’ll bring it up. I won’t know what to say.” Maria nodded.

“Just say what you did just there. Oh, hell no,” she said, mimicking me. I laughed.

“I can’t say that. That’s a little too harsh,” I said quietly. Maria gave me an exasperated look.
