I give Fluttershy some books and audio tapes to help her learn English so I can talk to her. I place the headphones on her head and play the first tape. I then run to the kitchen to prepare dinner as she studies. I dice carrots and celery sticks, toss them into a pot, and heat them up as I pour milk into two glasses. Ten minutes later, dinner is ready.
"Fluttershy," I call. "Dinner time!" I hear the tape stop and the little mare trots into the room. "Have you learned anything?"
She clears her throat. "A, B, C, D, E, F, G... H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S... S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z!"
"Good job," I cheer as I place dinner in front of her.
"I...l-like...c-c-car-carrots."
I can only smile at how fast she was learning. But deep in my heart, I know what is going to happen. I don't know when but one day, Fluttershy's friends will come and take her away to where she belongs. Whether it be tomorrow, or twenty years.

I take Fluttershy to an abandoned construction site outside town to help her practice flying. She's a little nervous at first but she gathers enough confidence to try.
Two inches... a foot... a yard... on the first day, she flies nine feet high.
"Look," she cheers quietly. "I can do it!"
"Yes you can," I say. "How about we head home and eat some ice cream?"
She beams at me and happily floats to the car. I unlock it and she opens the door with her hoof. She climbs in the back seat and buckles herself in.
"Can I sit in front," she asks.
"Not until you're old enough," I tell her. "We can't have you up here until I know you'll be safe."
She nods and looks out the window.
"I can't wait."
