Chapter 1

Just when I thought my day couldn’t get any worse, it did. I could only imagine how attractive I must look as I was staring straight up at Mr. Binkley with a look of complete horror on my face. But how could I not? He had not only announced that we had to do a presentation-which would normally get me pretty nervous considering I hate to speak in front of people, heck I barely like to speak loud enough for any of my peers to hear- but he also paired me up with the school’s most powerful and favorite guy ever. Joshua Streeter. Even the sound of his name makes my blood boil.

Ever since I was forced into coming to this school after my parents’ divorce, I realized that I could no longer slip under the radar because of that big egotistical jerk always picking on me. Now I’m not the kind of person to get worked up over the smallest things, he however seemed to aggravate me just by being within a mile radius of where I was. He would always call me names when I walked down the hall, or make fun of my answers to questions in class. It's not that he was overly mean, he was purely annoying, Though I can’t disagree on how handsome the boy was, he pretty much stepped out of a flipping Abercrombie and Fitch advertisement.  He always seemed nice to everyone too. But me, which is something I cannot comprehend because as far as I know, I have done nothing to provoke his behavior.

“Miss Lancaster?” Mr. Binkley waved his hands in face, bringing me back from my inside rant.

“What?” I snapped, maybe a little too rudely.

“Is it alright if you and Mr. Streeter are partners for this presentation? Seeing as you were both absent the day the class chose partners,” he explained. Damn! The only day I missed! Stupid dentist appointment!

“Uhm well I don’t-“Before I could finish my sentence Mr. Popular interjected.

“We’d love to be partners Mr. Binkley,” he replies in a casual yet annoying tone. I turned around in my desk and shot him a death glare. This didn’t work because his sly smirk turned into a mocking toothy grin, only adding to my extreme frustration. I swear he is the most obnoxious person I have ever met.

I was about to protest when Mr. Binkley moved onto explain the assignment, “The project will be to research and present a tourist attraction in which you find interesting. For example, if you think that the Eiffel Tower is interesting you would have to explain everything you find interesting about it and why you chose it. Now this assignment is very special because not only is it worth twenty percent of your grade, but the whole class gets to go on a trip to three of the places that were the highest marked presentations,” he told us joyfully. I only groaned while everyone else around me was talking to their partners about which place they should do.

“The catch is,” everyone groaned, “is that you can only go if you complete this assignment,”

After he finishes the sentence people began to blabber on about it as he shushes his class to announce more, “This presentation, is due a next Monday.” He smiles widely as he looks at our worried faces.

“Well I suggest you all get to work!” he turns his back to us and goes to sit at his desk and play on the computer.

I was in my own little world thinking about what to do it on when my favorite moron planted his behind right on all of my books, scattering my papers everywhere. I gave him a look of pure anger, causing him to laugh once again. I got out of my desk and rescued my stray papers that were probably going to be trampled soon. When I had them all gathered I stood up to put them back in my binder. Prepared to shove a tall and muscular seventeen-year-old guy off of my things, I was shocked to see him standing in front of me, holding my binder open, giving me a smile. Since I had no trust for him I snatched it away and stuffed my things in my bag.

He smirked at me again, “Somebody is a little touchy today,” he said under his breath but loud enough for me to hear.

“Whatever,” I scoffed. I settled back into my chair and he moved to the desk in front me of.

Settling back into his seat he asked, “So! What do you want to do it on? I was thinkin’ maybe we could do like the building things in Rome. Ya know, like that big rock thing that is only half there. I think if we did that, we would get a pretty good mark on it. What do you think?” his tone was so hopeful but his lack of knowledge actually made me laugh. In doing so, I received a confused look from him.

“Well first off, ‘that big rock thing’ is called the Roman Coliseum! It was one of the most technologically advanced buildings in Rome back then! I cannot believe how..” I stopped myself before I said anything I would regret. From the look on his face I could see that he could care less, and it would be stupid of me to continue. I regained composure and shook it off.

“Yeah whatever, since you know all about it we might as well do it,” he said with a smug smirk. He just tries to annoy me!

“Ok fine. But we will be working on it as much as possible. Ok? Because I want a good mark on this and I am not doing this all by myself. You have to actually work for once in your life,” I said harshly.

“Yeah whatever,” he waved off my insult, “I want to do good too. I could use a trip like that. I think this is gonna be great!” he yelled throwing his fist up in the air towards his buddies at the back of the room, who were all swarmed around Celia’s desk. He got and went to chat with his friends, leaving me with my thoughts.

Now Celia is not like most typical head cheerleaders, she is actually really nice. She looks like she should be one of the stuck up barbies you typically see but the one you need to watch out for is her best friend, Audrey. She doesn’t just pick on people –mainly me- she pulverises them with her icy glares and her malicious words. She is rich and beautiful; with her long blonde hair and her perfect everything. She even has a snotty look about her, because she hardly ever smiles, only when she’s talking to boys, and has her arms folded over her chest in a I’m-better-than-you manner. I stay away from her as much as possible because being torn to shreds from her insults is something I don’t like on a regular basis.

The bell finally rings and I head out of there as fast as I can. My attempt to bee line for the door was cut short because Josh jumped in front of me which made me fall right on my butt. Great.  I sneeed at him and he just gave me and amused look. I stood up and went to move around him, but his immensely sculpted arm flew in front to stop me.

Shooting him an annoyed look I snapped, “What now?”

“I’ll see you tonight, around sevenish?” he winked at me and gave a cocky smirk, then added, “Nerd,”

With that I flew past him to get to my next class before the bell rang. I could already tell how thrilling the next week will be.
