It was late afternoon when I went to the store to finish my day's "task". I was extremely tired but I knew I had to do this or I would have to sleep outside the door tonight. I wore my shades and this new blonde wig I had gotten as I went up to a rack of clothes. Skimming through the rack, I quickly pulled on one of the tags from a dress and stuffed it in my bag. I made sure the dress had no other one alike, then I took it out and walked to the cashier all the way at the other end of the hall.
She looked at me with a forced smile as I walked to the register and laid down the dress. "Hello, how may I help you?", she said in a sweet lady-like tone. "This dress... the tags missing, but I'd like to buy it", I easily lied without hesitation. "Oh that's alright... I'll take care of that in a moment". She took the dress and gave it a look. I gave her a nod and looked down until she left.
Once I couldn't hear her foot steps anymore, I looked around to make sure she was out of sight. I didn't see her. I took a deep breath and got to work. Pulling out my knife from my tight jean's pocket, I walked up to the cash register and stuck it in the little open crack until I heard the click. I opened the register as quick as possible and bunched up all the money into my big gucci purse when I suddenly saw the woman appear. She was in great distance but I could see her confused look. Without another thought, I dashed out the store. I heard the store alarm go on but I kept running until I reached my car.
I opened the door, threw in my purse, and jumped in as I pressed on the gas pedal after turning the keys. My heart was beating again but that was normal in these cases. I drove around the neighborhood once just in case any cameras were watching me, then I finally drove to our little place I call home. I killed the engines as I parked noticing how much my ankles were hurting from running in those stupid high heels. I pulled off the wig and took off the shades, then stepped out the car.
It was pretty dark already. The sun was at the very end of its setting and the half moon was already brightening the other side of the sky. I walked with my exhausted legs to the door and knocked before I pushed in and turned the keys. As I twisted the door knob and pushed the door open, I looked around and nobody was there. So I started to quietly walked to my room when I heard Ed.
"Hand it over, you ain't gettin away with it you know", Ed stopped me from going into my room.
I groaned and reached into my purse and took out all the money I made today and threw it across the table. I turned around and glared into his fierce eyes. "There!", I cocked my head towards the table. He glanced at it before walking up to it and stacking the bills in his hands. I watched as he licked the tip of his finger and started flipping through the green colored trash, counting each and every one.
Once he was done, he looked at me and stuffed all of the money into the pockets of his black baggy jacket. He sighed in annoyance. "200? Only 2 fucking hundred?! That's it?!" he raised his voice along with his hands momentarily. I leaned over to one foot and crossed my arms looking down at him. Ed was shorter than I was but he's muscular and too tough to argue with. Ed's 23 and I'm 19 so that gives him another reason to boss me around. We've lived together since we were young. We had both fled from the orphanage together and made it to this age.
"Look Ed I'm tired right now, and-" I closed my eyes and talked calmly before he interrupted.
"Do I look like I care if your tired or not!? Oh no missy, im not playin a game with ya. Your gonna make up for it tomorrow. Understood!?". I shook as he yelled in my face getting closer.
I was in no mood for him so I just nodded and he angrily went away and threw himself on the couch turning on the TV. The noise bothered me but I went to my room and slammed the door shut sitting on the edge of my bed. I combed my hair through with my fingers in distress and put my head down on my lap. Tears started forming in my eyes when I was reminded of the news I had gotten that day.
My uncle had died and he was the only one left from my family that I knew of. It tore me into pieces when I got the call letting me know he had gotten into a car accident and didn't make it. I puffed out a sigh and wiped my tears with my arm and stood back up to change my uncomfortable clothes.
Why does life have to be so depressing? I don't think I can take this anymore. All of my life I've suffered thinking there'd be a day I'll finally be happy and enjoy my life. But the way it was going, I doubt anything would ever change.
