Jeremy sighed and flopped down on the bed. He thought for sure Christine was his soulmate, but they'd been dating for months and he didn't have any proof. It was eating away at him. He sighed and pulled out his phone, staring at his contacts list.

Michael. Michael didn't have his soulmate yet, either. That was comforting, but it meant he wouldn't exactly be a good person to ask for advice.

Rich. Yeah, Rich found his soulmate. And burned down his house. Jeremy didn't really want to talk to him. Rich's story was so violent. Jeremy didn't want to think about the chances of that happening with him.

Christine. Um, no. She was kind of part of the problem.

Jenna. Nope. Better to not give her more information than you have to.

Jake. Same problem as Rich, really. Just the other side of the coin.

Brooke. Nope. Jeremy was still worried that he'd really hurt her during the SQUIP thing. He didn't want to reopen old wounds.

    Chloe. No. Just no.

His step-brother. Honestly, the kid freaked Jeremy out sometimes, especially when it came to his soulmate.

His cousin? Sure. Why not? Last Jeremy had heard, she and her soulmate weren't getting along well, but she had one and lived too far away to make Jeremy uncomfortable about the ordeal in person. It was good enough.

Finally convincing himself to dial, Jeremy held the phone up to his ear.

"Hello?" The voice was much too high and much too slurred to be his cousin. She was older than him, but the voice sounded like it belonged to a three year old.

"Hi? I'm calling for my cousin Veronica."

"Oh! Hi, Jeremy." Her voice had dropped to a more reasonable pitch, though it sounded almost defeated. "I didn't recognize your number, sorry."

"T-that's alright. What was up with your voice?"

"Easiest way to deal with people you don't want to call you. Pretend to be a kid and they'll leave you alone." Jeremy could hear her shrug on the other end. "What's up?"

"I um... I have a question about soulmates." Veronica was silent for a minute.

"Right. What do you want to know?" Jeremy winced at her clipped tone.

"I-if you don't want to talk about it, that's fine. I mean--"

"No. It's okay. What do you want to know?"

"How do I know I've found her?" The words spilled out of Jeremy's mouth too fast. Veronica laughed.

"How do you know it's a her?" Jeremy sighed. Veronica had been insisting for years that he was gay. He didn't appreciate it.

    "Just answer the question."

"Well that's obvious. Everyone knows you get your powers."

"But I don't have them yet. I really like the girl I'm dating but I don't have any powers yet. What if I'm broken?" Veronica snorted.

    "It's not her. Accept it."

    "But--"

"Jeremy, it's not her. Soulmates don't have to make sense. It's about finding someone who will improve you and your life in the end, even if they make it a living Hell for a while. No one said anything about liking them." Jeremy blinked and looked up at the ceiling of his bedroom. The fan blades spun in lazy circles.
