The image on the wall of monitors stopped Kay short, chilling her to her soul, and she found it almost incomprehensible.

Akira.

Naked, bound, gagged, bloody, dirty, hurt, and chained to the ground like an animal on Azera's lawn. Almost as if she sensed their scrutiny, she seemed to look right at the camera and through it. Those blazing blue eyes affected Kay, and for a moment, they were not separated by almost ten miles.

"Kay?" Claudia asked.

She blinked, and it was as if it had never happened.

How did Akira do that? She had no time to think.

"Akira says we must not attempt to rescue her, no matter what Azera does to her. It is a trap and a distraction. Check the trucks leaving out the back, a mile from the main entrance; they are on their way to Thane's compound. Azera dug out her tracking chip and cut off her thumb; they can access the complex without activating the fail-safe devices. My sister wants us to save Thane.

"She says he blindly sent most of his men to attack Azera's compound to rescue her. Others are on their way there, but we are closer. Without Thane, there is no Light."

Her voice sounded distant to her own ears, and she felt slightly disconnected from reality. It didn't help that seeing her sister like that brought back dark memories.

Her hands fisted as unexpected anger filled her. Despite Akira's part in her suffering, she didn't like seeing her sister hurt, and this was a revelation. She cared more than she realized, and it took her sister being tortured for her to admit it.

Was there something wrong with her? Had the years at Azera's hands made it hard for her to interpret her emotions? No. She loved the people in this room and had no problem working that out. She still blamed Akira and denied what she felt as a result. But love was an odd thing, wasn't it?

"So, how do we get into the compound without dying?" Marcella asked, and Kay grimaced.

"Akira implanted me with the same tracking chip and loaded my prints in the system in case this happened." Kay frowned as she said the words, and the implications registered.

"Did we underestimate Akira? Is she more farseeing than Thane?" Adrian asked as they watched a man with a wicked-looking whip approach the bound succubus, wasting no time as the thong flashed through the air and drew her blood.

No one even questioned the authenticity of her claim, sensing the odd presence in her mind, as surprised as she was that Akira could mind speak.

Her sister's power was evident in the strength it would take to mind-link over such a distance.

"We have no time," she said, and Darius nodded at Marcus.

"Marcus, you take Kay. Marcella? Take all the men that are not manning posts. I think we are either being led into a trap, or we are the last hope of not losing this war today," Darius commanded, and Marcus only nodded.

Azera's arrogance and cunning stunned them all. Who would have thought she would dare attack Thane so directly?

And how had she managed to divide his forces with such skill that he was left vulnerable? It was not the actions of a madwoman.

Their vans barreled through the tunnels in less time than anyone thought possible. They were not risking the main exits and spent years building these connecting conduits.

When they burst out of the ground on street level, they were inside a warehouse barely half a mile from Thane's compound, according to the GPS. The heavily reinforced doors slid open, and they exited into a deserted industrial complex. The doors slid shut behind them, bolted and armed.

They never encountered traffic as they roared around a corner to discover the side wall of a shored-up sideroad open. No one needed anyone to say anything as they switched directions and entered the tunnel at breakneck speed. This had to be the hidden entrance to Thane's compound.

Even as they entered, a red light flashed once, twice, then turned green as it picked up the signal from Kay's chip.

So far, so good.

As far as they drove, dead immortals littered the tunnels, and they accidentally bumped over a few of them, not daring to slow down, not even for a second.

They slid around another corner and were almost a mile into the compound.

Bullets rained at the lead vehicle, which Marcus drove with her seated in the back, clinging to the seat for dear life.

A truck much like theirs blocked the tunnel with a dozen armed men shooting at them. The rounds were armor-piercing but hit nothing vital as Marcus gunned the powerful engine, and they hit the vehicle with enough force to spin it out of the way.

It bashed against the wall and crushed a few of their enemies. The truck behind Marcus barely avoided clipping the shuddering vehicle, and they scraped together, but it settled the stranded truck into place.

The rest followed in their wake, but the last vehicle came to a screeching halt, and even as they rounded a corner, a brief firefight ensued.

Someone lobbed a grenade at them from a platform, and it exploded almost beneath the truck, lifting the front right side of the vehicle. When the wheels touched the ground again, the shredded tire tilted them slightly. Marcus' strength kept them going in the right direction as the engine made weird noises, and the rim sparked on the concrete.

The tunnel broadened briefly, and he swerved the truck to the side. Before his feet hit the ground, the second truck in line slowed just enough for the lefthand doors to be thrown open, and instinct had Kay jumping inside.

She collided forcibly with someone, but arms steadied her as another person crashed into her, and the door swung shut. Seven of them were crammed into the rear of the seven-seater with barely any space to move, and she'd banged her elbow against the doorframe.
