Chapter 1

I peek into the small bedroom that the four of us would have to share from now on.  The two sets of bunk beds were pushed against the walls, one on each side. The window was placed in the middle of the two sleeping areas, overlooking a local park. Children were laughing and playing on the jungle gym, enjoying themselves in the afternoon sun.

My daydreams were interrupted by the obnoxious sound of Jack's high pitch voice.

"Bitch, please! If you actually think I am going to live in a dump that's painted orange, you are sadly mistaken 'mon amie'!" Jack screams, which echoes from the living room.

I grimace at the idea of orange as well, deciding to join in on the design conversation.

"All I am suggesting," I hear Preston begin, "is that orange is a soothing color. Wouldn't you want to come home from a stressful day at school to find peace and tranquillity?"

"I'd rather come home to hormones and masculinity if you get my drift," Emmet states as he lays on the old couch which was pushed up against the far wall of the living area.

"Ugh, God Preston! The next thing I know you're going to make me play sports!" Jack cries out, throwing his hands up in the air.

I let out a deep sigh, causing the three of them to look my way.

"What do you think Effie?" Emmett questions me, lifting up his head from its resting position.

"No orange."

"Huzza!" Jack jumps up and down clapping his hands together. "I love being the loved one!"

"I was thinking a baby blue," I suggest, looking at my surroundings.

"What! No!" Jack whines out.

"I agree with our hetero power over here. Baby blue might be a nice touch." Emmet sits up and swings his legs around to sit properly on the couch.

His curly brown hair cascaded down over his forehead. He flipped his hair to reveal his bright green eyes, glowing in the afternoon light.

"Well then..." Jack begins in an irritated voice. "I suppose my artistic vision has been crumbled and cast aside. I shall see myself out."

With that, Jack flipped his purple cashmere scarf over his shoulder and made a grand exit out of the front door, slamming it behind him.

The remaining three of us began to count in unison. "One, Two..."

The door swings open and Jack's head pops out from one the side of the door. "Just to be clear here, what time are we moving in tomorrow?"

"10:30," Preston states, crossing his arms over his skinny chest.

"Okay then. Jack exits stage left!" He yells as he closes the door behind him once again.

"Do you think the witch has finally left on her broomstick?" Emmett chuckled, shaking his head.

"Probably heading out to go suck on some fresh blood." Preston rolled his eyes in annoyance.

"You know, he gives the word queer a bad name," Emmett says, putting on his black leather jacket.

"I know! Who doesn't like the color -"

"Everyone." I interrupt Preston. "There is not a single soul in the world I know but you who would want to live in an orange apartment."

"Fine. At least you chose a baby blue, I would have murdered myself if I had to live in green!" Preston moaned out in frustration.

"Woah, hold up. Who suggested green?"

"Jack." Preston and Emmett reply together.

I shake my head. "Is it a thing that gay guys don't have a great taste in color?"

"All the ones that are obviously gay I guess," Emmett says walking over to the front door.

"I'm not obviously gay!" Preston defends himself.

"Pres, my dead mother knows you're gay."

"My cat knew you were gay," I add.

"Be careful Emmet, you hang out with a hetero for too long you'll soon become one!" Preston slips on his sandals. "I better head home now," he adds. "My parents will be furious if I don' eat dinner with them on my last night in the house. See you guys."

Emmett and I wave goodbye before our friend disappears out into the hallway of the building.

"Be honest," Emmett turns towards me. "What do you think of the place?"

I tuck a strand of my short brown hair behind my ear. I carefully observe the space, trying to use my imagination to envision this place being my future home.

"I see potential. Just as long as we don't let Gay and Gayer choose any of the furniture." I smile to myself.

"Who knew life-long friends would one day land up sharing a stingy apartment together and going to the same god damn university," Emmett said, putting an arm around my shoulder.

I rested my head on his shoulder. "Who knew I would be living with three gay imbeciles."

He lightly punches me in the ribs and I couldn't help but laugh.

"Dating is going to be a bitch," I add, moving away from Emmett's hold.

"Ha, for you," he states. "But that's the unfortunate case of being friends with three gays who care about you. No one will ever be good enough."

He saunters towards the front door where I stand. I shoot him my 'Don't you dare' glare.

"Not again. This is a new chapter in my life, which means you three don't have a say in who I date. Got it?" I snap at him.

He chuckles deeply and raises his hands in defense. "That's what you think."

He raises an eyebrow and gives me a devilish smirk.

I knew living with my three gay friends was a mistake.

I just didn't know at the time how big the mistake turned out to be.
