Toby retracted immediately, creating more space between us. He stood up, threw his seat back, and stormed up to the door, forced it open using all his strength or what seemed like all his strength. Which was then followed by another slam as he exited the cafeteria.
My body urged me to go after him, pulling me to get me off my feet and out the door. I couldn't. All the students had turned to face me now, some were shocked, some were laughing and some were disgusted by my behaviour. I was frozen on the spot.
One minute later, a few people had started whispering to each other and I managed to shuffle uncomfortably at least. Great. The more the silence broke with them whispering, surprisingly the better it came and I had more control over my body. It got to a point when I managed to stand up and quickly make my way to the door, pushing it open and walking through cautiously just in case Ashley had found a sledge hammer or something to wack me on the head with. She seemed like that kind of girl. The one who loses her temper easily but can also bring it down quickly as well. Not an ideal girlfriend if you ask me, always changing emotions can be hard to handle.
I searched the corridor for them but didn't find them. I looked out the window to see the large field. My eyes then found a figure walking outside on the grass. Ashley. I opened the door and something caught my eye. She was holding Toby's jacket in her hand. I couldn't help but worry she had kissed him and took of his jacket but it didn't make any sense! Toby had only just walked outside and I couldn't find him anywhere.
Then it hit me. What if she had killed him, hidden him somewhere and stolen his jacket?! Why would she need it?! Power pumped through my body that I didn't even know I possessed. My body started to heat up uncontrollably, I was scared and yet powerful. I was so overwhelmed about what was happening as my body lead me back, so that Ashley, who had her back turned, didn't see me and took me to a door inside, a bit further down than the cafeteria.
I had only been at school for four days so I had no clue what was in there yet. It was like out of a horror film when the audience always go 'Don't open the door!' but it was so tempting. My hand touched the door handle as I looked around to see if anyone was coming. The coast was clear. I slowly turned the handle and the door opened a gap just big enough for me to peer through. It was pitch black but I could just make out a figure inside. Toby?
I opened the door fully and nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to see...
Toby was lying across the floor in what seemed a small janitors closet. He wasn't breathing. I quickly walked inside and knelt beside him, power and emotions were flying around me. I didn't know how to react and I wasn't thinking properly. Everything started to go hazy but I ignored it. I wasn't going to let him die! Tears were spilling down my face, I couldn't even see but I tried my best at CPR.
I shouted as loudly as I could for anyone who could help. I realised that the cafeteria was too far away to hear me and the door was strong, strong enough to hold sound. I then remembered the nurse Toby had found for me on my first day. Toby. His name started to make my eyes go all red and blotchy. I loved him. I really loved a taken man. Loved? I love! Stop talking in the past he isn't dead yet, not on my watch.
I ran as fast as my legs could take me up to the nurses injury room and as soon as I got there I explained everything, including how Ashley had seen him last. Even she started to cry, she must obviously get really attached to her students. I ran back to the door where he was and she followed me. When we got there, he wasn't there.
What?
"Are you sure he was in here?" The nurse asked as she rubbed her eyes, clearing the tears that eventually stopped and she looked at me seriously.
"H-h-he was in here, I'm sure of it." I replied, my breathing was going all over the place as I cried. The nurse glared at me and I realised she must think this is a prank. I told her he was here and I have no evidence of him, he had vanished. It was like he had never been here in the first place and yet I was positive he had been.I'm not crazy!
Am I?
The nurse started to ask me lots of questions like if I had been feeling hazy, which I had been but I knew what I saw. Toby was dead.
Then I realised something...
Ashley.
I couldn't wait any longer. I zoomed past the nurse and pushed open the door to the field. I wildly searched everywhere. Trees, grass, goal posts, she was nowhere. There was no way she had come back inside because the door is to heavy it would have made at least a slam, even if she tried to come in quietly.
I walked back inside, utterly confused and found the nurse watching me worriedly as if I had lost the plot. I kept repeating in my head:
I'm not crazy.
I'm not crazy.
I'm not crazy.
Crazy? Am I?I rubbed my head and wiped my tears that were pretty much dry already from the warm air outside and when I removed my hands from my eyes, I didn't understand what was walking towards me. Toby and Ashley?
Toby came out of the boy's bathroom and Ashley came out of the girl's. It looked too staged to me but the nurse just tutted at me. She believed this charade??!
I stared at Toby as he made his way over to us. His eyes were more blue than ever as he glued them on me. He was watching my every move, terrified but I didn't know what of.
Me?
Ashley followed behind him and she had a satisfied smile across her lips. However she never looked up once at me or the nurse she just kept her head down, smiling to herself proudly.
"What seems to be the problem, nurse?" Toby asked, no longer looking at me. In fact he wouldn't look at me any longer. I guessed it was the fact my eyes were all red and blotchy from crying. Maybe he was worried for me? Although his face before obviously showed he was frightened not worried.
"Well.." The nurse started, fixing her eyes on me. I couldn't handle it any longer! He had to know what I saw and how I felt about it!
"I saw you in the janitors closet." I interrupted. Toby didn't expect me to say anything. He didn't want to look at me but now he had no choice. He slowly turned his head until his eyes locked with mine. I couldn't tell at this point in time what he was feeling but it definitely wasn't good.
"You were... dead." I continued. He flinched at the last word. He didn't want me to think he had died but I knew what I saw and I think he knew that I wasn't giving up anytime soon.
So it was true?
I'm not crazy?
The nurse looked back at Toby but Toby didn't look at her he stayed facing me. His eyes flashed with fear and worry like they had done before but it was so fast this time I didn't even know if it actually happened or if it was my imagination.
"Are you okay, A? You look a bit faint." He argued. I couldn't believe what had just escaped his mouth. What I saw wasn't an hallucination and he was going to make it sound like I had made all this up in my head and that I was ill?! Yes, I was faint but not because I had eaten something I shouldn't, it was because I had seen my soulmate's lifeless body beside me in a closet!! His lips were quivering, as if he could read my thoughts, and his eyes looked sorry for me, I was sure he mouthed 'I'm sorry.' as the nurse took me to her medical room.
As I was walking away Toby never took his eyes off of me. Ashley had to grab his hand and pull him back into the cafeteria...
