The Crystal
(Vincent E. Catacutan)
Chapter 5 The Crystal of Light and Dark
“How do you think I’ll believe you?” doubts Vincent
“I’ll only tell you the truth,” reassures Iros. “It’s in you if you’ll not believe.”
Vincent can see no lies on the face of Iros. He decides to just listen anyway, so he sits on the ground and glares straightly and critically to the man he talks to.
“I guess you are ready to listen,” considers Iros.
“Do you think it is fine to tell him now?” dissents Tyfa.
“He must know this earlier. Time is running out.”
“The time is running out?” wonders Vincent.
“I’ll explain it all to you,” responds Iros. “Now listen to me.”
“There is a land that floats above the sky called Phirea. All of us, Phireans, who comprehend power to control nature were once living there peacefully. Phirea was divided into two kingdoms. One of those was the Kratos. Tyfa and I belonged to that kingdom. Our ruler was your father, Regis. He controls the five elements- Wind, Earth, Fire, Water and Thunder. The other kingdom was the Hypoc, which was reigned by Kurthos. He can manipulate darkness.
Out of the minds of all, Kurthos thirsted to have a power that can dominate the whole Phirea, but he saw our king as a block for his aims. He realized that your father was precisely hard to challenge, and even though he succeeded to defeat Regis, he would lose an enormous amount of energy. If that happened, he would be easily suppressed by other Phireans. He thought of ways to persevere his selfish plans. Because of being desperate, he had decided to steal the Crystal of Light and Dark.
The Crystal of Light and Dark can be a source of an exceeding power that can cause too much harm not just in Phirea, but also here on Earth, thus it was greatly protected. It was placed inside the Phirean Temple, on the head of a golden torch, guarded by the flame consecrated by the souls of the dead kings. Only the living kings of Phirea were permitted by the hallowed flame to come near the Crystal.
Kurthos had the knowledge about the destruction that his plan could cause. His life would also be in immense danger, but he ignored the consequences and still contrived to own the Crystal for his desires,” tells Iros.
“A good story,” conludes Vincent. “Everyone can make stories like that.”
“Still not believing,” utters Tyfa.
“There is no way I can believe your story,” disbelieves the confused guy. “I’m through listening. I’m leaving.”
“Do you want to taste again my power for you to believe that there are Phireans!” dares Tyfa angrily.
Vincent stops walking. “You said that my father has great powers, didn’t you?” he verifies to Iros.
“I did.”
“If everything you told was true, if my father really possesses that kind of power. Then he would not have escaped when the beasts attacked our village!” wails the puzzled lad. Different emotions mix in him. He remembers all his lonely and sorrowful experiences, especially the people who discriminate and disdain him. His blame for his father upsurges, and he cannot take what he heard from the strangers. “With his power, he could have protected us, and my mother might not die! Maybe I’m not treated as a cursed! Maybe I’m not living this cold and miserable life! Now, how can you convince me to believe your story?”
“It might be what you were told about your father,” answers Iros. “I’m not yet done with my story. I will tell you what truly happened.”
“What truly happened,” astounds Vincent.
“Yes. Come back and finish my story before you go.”
Vincent, with all the things that perplex his mind, puts himself together, comes back, sits down and started to listen again.
