HIM

Friday

"So, do you like stalking people or something or is it a natural thing?" We - Renata and I- were sitting in front of the school, waiting for the school day to start as usual. I sat across from her, watching students walk by and talking to their friends and Renata, as far as I could tell, was asleep. She always slept in the morning whenever she could, and even during class. Mostly during Social Studies, but that's just because the only thing we do then is watch movies.

"It's not natural, I'm just trying to be a friend here. Give me a chance?" I leaned on my arms, mirroring Renata's usual sleep position. She glared, looking up from her slim arms. There were dark circles under her eyes and I could see she was having a hard time staying awake. More so than usual. I wanted to say something but... something told me she wouldn't like me pointing out her flaws...

"Why do you want to be my friend again? You know, I'm not the only person here, and I'm a girl. Don't you want some male friends to play videogames with?"

I laughed. "Nah, I'm too old for videogames. So are a bunch of guys here but their mental state is that of a three year old." That made her laugh. It was progress, even if it rarely happened but every now and then I managed to get her to smile, or laugh. It's not exactly easy, but when we have all our morning classes together, there's more chances to get her to warm up to me. Funny how I'm clinging to a girl, even though I should isolate myself like I'd done back at FairTree Middle School.

The bell rang then, signaling that it was eight o'clock. Renata and I both jumped out our seat and ran for the doors, which was a normal thing to her and something new to me. Renata likes to be first so she doesn't have to deal with others, but I used to stay in the back and wait for everyone to go. It's new and I like it.

But for some reason when we stopped at the doors, they weren't open. There was always a teacher waiting for the bell to ring - I learned that from Monday, when I'd gotten into that fight - and always opened the door for us. Where were they now? Renata sighed from beside me, pouting again. If I had a penny for every time Renata pouted, I'd be rich by now. Funnier thing is that she doesn't even realize the action herself.

"Great, now what? Mr. Morton always wait for us!"

Renata leaned against the door, just as I began to speak. I knew something bad was going to happen from that-

The door finally opened and Renata fell into the doorway. "Owowowowowow!" I couldn't help the laugh that left my lips. This seemed to happen everyday, as a matter of fact. Either she'd bump into the door, it would hit her in the face, she'd trip in the stairs, or something but she always managed to hurt herself.

"Again... you're going to have to work on your balance. No wonder you kept falling in that one game in gym yesterday." That one game was called jungle rope, where two people had to walk over a slab of wood and get to the other side. It'd be easy, except for the fact that both participants are going the opposite way and eventually, when their paths cross, you have to find a way to get past them without falling off the wood. Renata was my partner - by my choice - but she'd fallen before we'd even crossed paths. I fell off just because I couldn't stop the laughter that came from her clumsiness.

"Shut... it..." she mumbled, standing up. "Now my ass hurts!" There's another good point about Renata. Sometimes, she talks without thinking about it. And if not that, she's just plain unselfconscious. It was a good quality that most girls didn't have, sadly enough. There were even guys that are self-conscious of themselves everyday.

"That's your fault," I commented, walking up the stairs beside her. People stared at us as we went so I sent them an evil glare when she wasn't looking. What was with these people and why did they hare Renata so bad? I mean, the girl's all around cute and it's hard to believe that no guys have tried going out with her. Honestly, I might try that myself. Once she starts seeing me as an actual friend and not a nuisance in her life.
