THE NEXT DAY, Jenna felt like she could fly. Like she could conquer the world, do anything — hell, she even had fun doing homework and studying for an upcoming quiz in Chemical Kinetics. The sun shone a bit brighter, she greeted her teachers with a smile, she even made small talk with the girl next to her in one of her classes, in the belief that everything was good, everything was positive and nothing could ruin her mood, not even social interactions with strangers. And usually, that was ominous and meant that something bad was going to happen, but that wasn't the case this time. For once, Jenna Rivers was granted a slice of happiness and she didn't mind one bit.
"Looks like things went well with Fitz yesterday, huh?", even Simmons could tell that even though Jenna was often cheerful and smiling, this was something more. The two were now walking towards the blonde's room, with Jemma loyally escorting one of her two closest friends. All their classes were over for the day, and Jenna was glad — now, she could reread through the notes she and Fitz had exchanged over the day, and finally, give a call to her sister. It had been a while since the two had talked, and frankly, she was starting to miss Jane too much.
"Yeah. Yeah, it was nice", Jenna admitted, still beaming like a ray of sunshine — which, Simmons was positive she had actually turned into.
Still, the biochemist lifted an eyebrow and tilted her head to the side as if to doubt her words. "Just nice? Somehow, I am having difficulties believing that", she teased, her accent laced with a playful tone as they finally reached Jenna's room, both of the girls stopping by the door to continue their conversation before parting ways. Suddenly, Simmons gasped sharply and gently swatted Jenna's arm, surprising the victim of her enthusiasm, but before she could question what it was for, Jemma had elaborated. "Wait— did you two... you know?", she broke into a wicked grin, but even if Jenna was sure she was supposed to understand what she was hinting at, she didn't.
"Do what?"
Groaning, Jemma moved her hands in the air in frustration. "Kiss!", she let out, loud enough for a few passerbys to turn their heads at them, causing blush to creep onto Simmons' cheeks. "Did Fitz kiss you? Or did you kiss him?", she asked again, somewhat quieter this time, but her eyes still shone with excitement and her voice was beyond intrigued. But, sadly, Jenna had to let her down.
"Kiss? What do you mean? Was I supposed to? Was he going to?", Jenna exploded with questions, her eyebrows knitting together as she stared at Simmons in confusion. However, in response she only got a disappointed sigh and a shake of her head, making it obvious that Simmons had expected something to happen between the two of them.
"Nevermind, Jen. Okay, you better go give your sister that call. We can talk later, whenever, really", Jemma flashed a smile, and after giving Jenna a quick hug, the young woman was already walking away. Even though she was suddenly gone, it warmed Jenna's heart — with Fitz, she had some kind of sparks that always ignited her heart, but with Simmons, she had a pure friendship, one that she was immensely grateful for. She had never had any of those, a friend who would hug her as a goodbye, or gush over gossip with her, or just appreciate her for who she was. It felt good.
