LIFE WENT ON. It sounded almost heartwrenching in its simplicity, but it was true — Fitz and Simmons were gone from the academy, and along with them, Jenna had lost a piece of her heart, but that didn't stop her from working hard to achieve her dreams, the very same dreams that the two had already reached. She wanted to be an agent, she wanted to look at her father's name on the Wall of Valor, not with heartbreak, but with pride, of him and herself. Maybe she could even find her way to the same team as Jemma and Leo.
Even if her mind was still occasionally plagued by the day they had left, and the tears she had shed for her best friends, Jenna's natural optimism came out as she thought about the words they had told her. We'll see again — that was what both Fitz and Simmons said to her before walking out of the academy, and that was what Jenna was still working towards.
Luckily, she had her family to support her when she was at her lowest point. Losing her friends had been hard at first, but with Jane's movie nights, Evan's lessons at the nearby gun range, and Magdeline's motherly advice and warm hugs, Jenna was working towards happier days. And it wasn't like her friends were dead, they were just far away, and although it made things challenging, it came with opportunities. Even if the lives they now lived were busy, they did sometimes find the time to catch up and video chat.
For now, Jenna was studying hard, working towards graduation, and also hellbent on one day finding her way to her friends again.
Computer classes were still her favorite, and she supposed that meant something — perhaps her destiny was to take on the technology part of S.H.I.E.L.D, be a genius nerd and save the world by cracking codes. Perhaps that was her purpose, her place in the agency — frankly, she liked the sound of it.
As she was typing away one day, headphones in and her fingers speeding around the keyboard to work on the tasks they had been assigned for the lesson, Jenna was suddenly distracted by a sound she hadn't heard in a while. Not so vividly and clearly, anyway. But indeed, it was the eager ping, caused by a new email in her inbox, and as her fingers slowed down and her eyes looked up at the bright screen, her pink lips curved upwards and her heart began to run like a wild horse, free in her chest and full of love.
"Good morning to my favorite genius. I hope you're doing well, Jenna. Tell me everything whenever you find the time? Although traveling the world and being an engineer is great, I miss you. A lot. x", the email read, sent by the one and only Leopold Fitz.
With a smile still lively on her lips, Jenna's hand instinctively went to her collarbone, from where she picked up the aries pendant and clutched it tightly in her hand. She had spent so many nights twirling it around and thinking about Fitz, so many days dreaming about their reunion one day. The necklace was something she always carried with her — it had become beyond important to her, as it was the one constant she still had left of Fitz. And she had no intentions to ever let go of it.
And as Jenna began to type an answer, she couldn't help but feel her heart fill with bittersweet longing, along with a fair share of joy. Since she was young, she had believed that S.H.I.E.L.D would be her paradise, but it turned out, it was only leading her to one. The path she had taken on was going to take her to her own, personal paradise.
However, although she lived in the undying belief that Fitz was her paradise, that the happiness she felt around him was that, it wasn't.
