Chapter 4: Hospital Wing

September 9, 1998

It was all a haze to Draco. Harry couldn't speak, then he found himself worried and called over the teacher, and suddenly Harry was making his descent from chair to floor. It was a reflex, Draco flew from his own seat and caught him. When the rest of the class realized something was wrong, they were surprised, to say the least, that Draco was holding their hero above the floor. It wasn't because Draco was holding him, they'd always suspected something more than just animosity was between the two. They were only surprised that they saw it, as they never had before.

Professor Yerticland dismissed the rest of the class and asked Draco to stay and help her take him to the hospital wing. They carried him in shocked silence, and Draco couldn't help but notice how light Potter was. If he weren't reluctant for obvious reasons, he would ask to carry him alone. He would have no problem, and physical strength wasn't one of the things Draco prided himself on.

When they reached the Hospital Wing, Draco was ordered to stay put while Professor Yerticland fetched the Headmistress. He was subsequently subjected to questioning from Madame Pomfrey, "Did he show any signs that he would pass out before he did?"

Draco shook his head.

"Did he mention feeling faint or any other odd symptoms?"

"Well, I wouldn't know," Draco replied, slightly annoyed.

"I was under the impression that you were next to him, Mr. Malfoy."

"And next to him, I was. He couldn't speak, that's why I called over Professor Yerticland."

"What potion did he take?"

"Vocabonum. before he passed out, he wrote that he'd given me all of the Osha roots we were supplied with to stir into it, instead of checking that it was the right amount. He used way too much."

Professor Yerticland and Headmistress McGonagall bustled in then, and their attention was taken away from their previous conversation. "Professor Yerticland explained, and we won't know all of his symptoms until he wakes. Considering he passed out, we have reason to believe that you either didn't put in all of the correct ingredients or one of you put an extra ingredient into the potion that reacted with something already in the potion. Madame Pomfrey, I need you to take whatever you need from Harry for samples and work with Healers at Saint Mungo's to figure out what was in that potion other than some extra Osha root."

Draco looked back at Harry. He looked foreign when he slept. He was always so serious and cautious looking since the war. Draco found himself thinking Harry looked better this way, almost innocent. Before his thoughts could continue, McGonagall spoke to him, "Mr. Malfoy, since this may very well be your fault-- don't even try to argue, we all know that Mr. Potter is not our most gifted potions student and was paired with you for a reason, you should have checked that he was getting the ingredients right-- you will be staying in the Hospital Wing with him overnight. Watch over him, and call for a house elf if you may need one to come get me. You'll both be excused from classes tomorrow for purposes of deciding on how the situation will be handled and hopefully, he will wake up soon." She looked worriedly down at Harry, but she knew that he wouldn't let something like a simple voice potion bring him down. Not after all he'd been through.

She left him with a nod, and Draco was left to his thoughts. Harry couldn't die or be permanently damaged... He'd found himself given a surprising second chance from the Wizarding World because he was forced into the life of a Death Eater and evil, and wasn't given much of a choice not to go that path. If Harry didn't make it out of this good as new, he'd be blamed. Deep down, a voice whispered so that he hardly registered it, that being blamed wasn't the only reason Harry had to be okay.

Draco had never slept as good as he had on the Hogwarts Express the time he shared a compartment with one Harry Potter.

Harry woke up at three in the morning. By that time, Draco had already fallen asleep, slumping forward in his chair with his head resting on the edge of Harry's bed. He was struck with the urge to pee and tried to carefully get out of bed. Unfortunately, his leg got caught in the blanket and rudely awakened one tired Draco Malfoy. "...Potter?"

"Yes?" Harry sheepishly mouthed. Then remembered that he couldn't use his vocal cords and waved his arm so Malfoy knew he was there and fine. He pulled himself up and was confronted with the sight of a grumpy Draco, "Did you just roll off the bed?"

"No, I--" Harry started, but was again reminded of and frustrated by the fact that he could not speak. He found paper and scribbled down that he had been trying to go to the bathroom and his foot got caught in the blanket. He then made his way to said bathroom.

When he returned, room was lit by Draco's wand. "Are you okay?"

Harry cautiously made his way back to his bed and nodded, brows furrowed. He then proceeded to trip and hit his head on the nightstand next to his hospital bed. He stumbled up and laid down, holding his now bleeding head. "You are not," Draco scoffed. "You are lucky I'm learned in healing spells, let me see it." Harry took his hands off his head and looked at his hands, now saturated with blood. Draco winced slightly at the sight, and quickly healed and cleaned Harry's head. This successfully changed his mind about becoming a Healer...

This is a shorter chapter, but I want it to end here. Two updates in one day! I'm a machine! Actually, I'm sick and was out of school today and this is what I had to do. But I don't mind all that much when I get to write! So hopefully, I can get out more chapters tonight or tomorrow. As I write, I come up with more ideas and I am getting more and more excited about this book, but I'm scared I can't type fast enough and plan and edit and AHHHHHHHH. So yeah, lovez y'allz.
