The spring air made the long blades of grass and delicate wildflowers dance as the sun bathed them in warm, calming light.
"Tell me one thing that you can't live without," He mused, eyes wild yet hopeful.
"A serious thing or a funny thing?" She countered and watched his face buckle slightly. She frowned but waited for his answer.
"Anything."
It felt like a huge, telling question instead of something that should be light and fun. It felt as if her answer was something that would make him react but she was at a loss on how to answer.
"I can't live without my cat," She said carefully, as her eyebrows narrowed, watchful.
He didn't disappoint. Jason's face lined with stress.
"I don't mean anything bad, just that shelters are overrun with animals, especially cats. If I had to do something that would make me lose my beloved pet, I would be upset." She smiled with a sharp nod as if that expressed her point perfectly.
"Obviously," He whispered under his breath but if she heard him she gave no reaction. "I am talking on a grander scale than your pet cat."
"Oh," She floundered. He grabbed up her hand as she tried to turn away from him until it dawned on her. It was like she was hit with a brick and she turned back to him with a gasp."Oh! You, of course. Yes. I mean..." Her face reddened, berating herself that she first answered 'her cat.'
"I was hoping you'd say that," He grinned, relief softened his shoulders but he stood impossibly taller.
"Why?" She grinned, but her eyes were laced with confusion as the soft wind tugged at her long hair, as if the fairies were trying to pull her away.
It shouldn't be this hard, he thought as he took a moment to look around at the trees surrounding them in the distance. It was private, beautiful and just the two of them, luckily, since he wasn't confident that she'd say yes to his proposal. If she rejected him there no one but them would know about it.
The ring in his pocket seemed to get heavier by the moment.
"Elizabeth," He gulped. "From the first moment I met you, I was enchanted... and as Yoda would say, 'Do or do not there is not try,' so here goes-"
"Here goes what?" Elizabeth asked but then gulped as Jason dropped to one knee. It was then that she took in their surroundings: the beautiful meadow, the trees, and the enchanting setting sun sending a kaleidoscope of dancing light over them... she figured it out.
"Will you be my player two? My light to the dark side?"
Elizabeth's frowned deepened. "Did you just ask me to marry you with... Star Wars references?"
"That was not a yes." He bit out as she looked toward the trees and her eyes followed.
"Are our family and friends going to pop out of the trees like one of those YouTube videos? I love those videos."
"No, it's just us..." Distracted, Jason looked toward the trees in horror for a moment before turning back to her. "I was trying to ask you to be my wife, Elizabeth."
"With a Star Wars proposal?"
Jason heaved an exasperated sigh, showing his frustration. "Yes. Perhaps the Star Wars references are a bit cliché, but the question remains unanswered." He was floundering in the moment. The white flag waved over the horizon, the alarm bells ringing loudly in his head and there was no lifeboat in sight.
