She remembered it all. Even the sweet sound of his voice as he recited his promise before his abrupt departure. She looked up at Delia. "Gabriel" she calmly muttered with a weak smile. "Yes Gabriel da massa's son "Delia whispered and took her hand. Iyila nodded in agreement. Gabriel: her master, her secret lover, now  the father of her child. But what did Delia mean by saying he was a free wind, she thought. What did she mean by saying how was she going to transport the news of her pregnancy to him. She vaguely stared at Delia, her thoughts a whirlwind. Where was Gabriel? Was he not in the mansion waiting for her to recover so they could both travel to Illinois? His promise was still vivid in her mind. Was it not already more than seven days?
Deila's warm hand on her knee squeezed her out of her whirling ponder. "Iyila ya__"
"Where is Gabriel?" she sharply asked, interrupting Delia. Delia gave her a quizzical stare as though she was more demented than she appeared. "Where is Gabriel, has he not come?" she repeated, yet inwardly wishing not to be answered. Iyila couldn't evade the recognition of the effect of Deila's answer whether  an affirmative or a negation. She knew either answer was surely to be a bitter pill she wasn't so eager to take in. A yes only meant he had come but perhaps gone away as quick as possible over hearing or seeing how demented she had been after Dede's attack on her. What if he was amongst those men that day whom had stared down at her complete naked body. Perhaps shame and disgust had pushed him away or maybe he had waited for days or weeks or even months for her to recover. Perhaps when she didn't on time he had returned to Illinois with a broken heart.
While a no, well just maybe meant worse. A no meant he had not come at all. Perhaps due to the ill words that had reached him through his brother or through Collete's letter. Or worse if...She closed her eyes. She couldn't admit. It was too degrading and heart breaking to succumb to the thought that just maybe...only maybe he hadn't come at all. Possibly he didn't love her the least and he had lied to her when he'd told he that he loved her dearly.
"No Iyila, Gabriel ha no come"
Delia answered. Her words were as soft as cotton but its effect was as rough as the master's whip. She tried to stifle a stubborn sob and her eyes remained shot. Heavens! He did not come. Gabriel never came. He didn't love her and that was her reality. Violent sobs began to rock her slender body and despite her strong resolution, she found herself reaching for Delia for comfort. Iyila's sobs intensified as Delia rocked her back. How could Gabriel be so cruel? How could he? She should have known.
I should have known!!!
