The next day at school went by quickly, and we learned about irrelevant topics; Biology, Geometry, and things that I find unnecessary as life skills; however, during my lunch period, I noticed a new student. He was a senior and his name was Kyle. All the girls immediately loved him. Of course, him being a senior and me being a sophomore we had no classes together; however, we were in the same lunch period and maybe we could become friends. I didn’t have very many friends, I was the one they picked on, but I didn’t mind. One day I’m going to be smarter than them, with a better job than them, and it will pay off.
“Nick, are you going to answer me?” I was completely zoned out and clueless on what Mrs. Carson had asked me. I looked over at Jonathan, one of my only friends and he had 6 of his fingers up.
“6?” I replied.
“No, unfortunately the “6” did not settle in America in 1702. I looked across the room at Jonathan who was busting out laughing, and whose face was turning as red as a tomato.
“Oh, and Nick I will see you after school today, for your detention.” Mrs. Carson did not look happy at me.
“Ok” I stammered. Great I had a detention, if 45 minutes with Mrs. Carson wasn’t enough I had to stay a half an hour after school. Mrs. Carson’s class was the last period of the day so I ran to my locker to get my stuff. When I returned I was greeted angrily by Mrs. Carson and a group of students who also had detentions.
“Nick, I told you to stay after not go socialize in the hall way.”
“Sorry” I honestly did not remember her saying that and I definitely wasn’t socializing in the hallway, I was getting my books so I could go home after this. I hadn’t realized I was still standing so I grabbed a seat.
“Get out something to do.”
I grabbed my paper and pen and began to write, I loved to write stories.
“Can I borrow a piece of paper?” Someone whispered next to me, I rotated my head and grabbed a piece, and then handed it to him. I then realized it was the new kid.
“Sure” I replied. “I’m Nick by the way; it’s nice to meet you.” And I held out my hand for him to shake.
“Kyle” he replied with a smile that made the sun look dim as he shook my hand.
“I’m going to go run some errands, don’t do anything stupid.” said Mrs. Carson who ruined all of our whispering conversations. As soon as she left the room I took it to my advantage.
“Why did you get a detention?”
“I was late, it’s my first day and I have no idea where anything is.”
“Well, if you ever need help just ask me.”
“Sounds good” he replied.
“So Kyle, where are you from?”
“Oh, I just moved here with my mom from California.”
“Wow, that’s a long way from California to Maine.”
“Yeah it was rough but it’s the best for us.”
“That’s good, I lived here whole life, little Alagash, can you believe only 267 people live here?”
“268 now” he chuckled. “I think I saw you in my lunch, maybe I could sit by you I haven’t made many friends” he said.
“Are you serious? I saw you hanging out with those girls and the football team.”
“Oh, them. I don’t really want to play sports or be popular. They were all talking about how good I was, but I never played sports, I was just as good as everybody in California.”
“You don’t like the attention? Or the girls?”
“No, not really.” He chuckled.
“Well, you and I can agree on something, I would hate to be popular.”
“Yeah, I wasn’t too popular at my old school.” He replied.
“I see you guys have taken my errands to an advantage,” said Mrs. Carson who just appeared in the room. We all sat silently. “Well detention is dismissed.” Most kids rammed through the doorways but I wanted to say bye to Kyle.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“I’ll see you at lunch, have a good evening.” He said.
“You too; bye.” I replied.
“Bye.” He replied and gave him a reassuring smile as we parted ways.
