I swiftly grabbed my lunch and ran into the cafeteria. I grabbed my usual seat; alone. I waited a few minutes for Kyle, but there was no sight of him anywhere. Just as my hopes got to an end he appeared.

“Hey, sorry I’m a few minutes late.” He said.

“Hey, its okay, at least you showed up, right?” I replied.

“Right.” He nodded as he said this. We ate our lunches and chatted about his old life, his family, sports, and music. It was fairly warm in the cafeteria and they didn’t have the industrial fans on. By force of habit I rolled up my sleeves.

“Um…Nick.” He stammered and pointed his head to one of the bruises that was now showing in the plain sight of day. My face turned bright red and I immediately pulled down my sleeves, I had completely forgotten about the bruises. “Is everything okay Nick, you look really pale.”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” And I gave a reassuring smile.

“I feel like you’re not okay, we need to talk.”

“Okay, when, where, and why?” I replied.

“Those bruises, something is not right Nick,” he said fast to get the words off his chest.

“I told you I’m fine.”

“No you’re not; ask your parents if you can come over later, I want to talk to you.” He replied with a serious tone, unlike earlier. I grabbed my phone out of my pocket, and went to my mother’s phone number, why would I ask my dad for anything? The message read:

“Mom, I don’t want to inconvenience you or dad but I won’t be coming home after school, I’m going to a friend’s house. I’ll see you later tonight.”

I sent the message and put my phone in my pocket. “They said I can go over your house tonight.” I replied without even waiting for her response.

“Good.” He said and we sat most of lunch quietly, not starting a new conversation. The bell rang and he shouted over the crowd, “I’ll meet you outside of Mrs. Carson’s room at the end of the day.”

“Okay, bye.” and gave a short smile.
