Legacy

Alexander's POV

"And next up to the podium we have our valedictorian Alexander Hamilton", announces Washington.

There's applause as I stand from my seat on the stage and walk to the podium. Washington pats my back and stands off to the side. A spring breeze blows a strand of hair in my face. I tuck it behind my ear. It's such a nice day. I'm glad they decided to had graduation outside.

"Good evening , and welcome. On behalf of everyone here at Columbia University, thank you for joining us."

Time seems to slow down slightly. I glance over at Washington. He has a look of pride on his face. He nods for me to continue.

"The past two years have been the most.... influencial years of my life. I've met an amazing group of people who I hold close to my heart. I've learned so many things, and built bonds that are unbreakable. I've even fallen in love......" I blush and shoot a quick glance over at John.

"But I'm not here to talk about my college experiences. I'm here to talk to my classmates. My fellow graduates. Congratulations. We've made it this far, and some how we're still alive."

A ripple of laughter runs through my classmates who are sitting in front of me. Lafayette nods in agreement, his bejewled cap (courtesy of Hercules) moving with his head.

"I'm not gonna sit up here and talk forever, because none of you want to sit through that. Instead I'm going to ask you a question. When you're gone, what will your legacy be? Who will keep your flame alive? Who tells your story?", I ask out to the audience.

"The answer is that you don't know. And, at least for me, that's terrifying. So I guess a better question would be 'What do you want your legacy to me?' What even is a legacy? It's planting seeds in garden you never get to see. No matter who tells it, you wright your own story. Somebody really smart explained that to me", I say with a small smile. "You are the author of your own story. Take whatever the hell life throws at you and run with it. Don't be afraid to do what you love. And don't be afraid to love who you want. Choose your own legacy."

I look over at Washington again. Is he crying?

"I think that's all the time I have for today. I'm so proud of all of you. Thank you."

The crowd applauds. People start to stand up. I turn and start to walk to my seat, but I'm stopped when Washington pulls me into a hug.

"Good job son", he whispers.

Somebody decided to throw a party afterward in the Lounge. Music was blasting from a speaker hooked up to someone's phone. Drunk newly graduates were dancing all around us.

"Alright alright! That's what I'm talking about!", yells my drunk fiance from the table he standing on. He wobbles and almost falls over, but thankfully I'm there in time to catch him.

"Ok I think that's enough alcohol for tonight", I say, helping him down from the table.

"Come on Alex! Relax", he slurs. "It's a party!"

"I can't relax. I'm too busy making sure you don't kill yourself", I say, struggling to keep him from falling down.

He rolls his eyes. "I'm fine. You on the other hand, need another beer. You've barely had anything to drink."

"You and I both know your trying to get me drunk so we can fuck."

He shrugs. "Maybe I am", he says with a grin. He reaches down to grab my ass.

"Ewe! Stop being gross you guys! Your in public!", yells Eliza.

Despite John's pouting, I make him sit on the couch with me. He sulks and crosses his arms. As I play with his hair, Angelica sat down on the couch next to me.

"Hey I didn't get to say it earlier but your speech today was amazing", she says.

Angelica Schuyler had been studying in London for the past year, and came home to see her sister, Eliza, graduate.

"Thanks, but Washington helped me write most of it. He inspired it", I shrug.

"You know he's super proud of you right? I don't care what you say, you were always his favorite", she teases. "No but seriously I've never seen him cry before."

"Yeah me neither-"

"WHOOOOO!!" Our conversation is interrupted by the one and only Hercules Mulligan. "YO ALEX! STOP BEING LAME AMD GET UP AMD DANCE!"

Him and his boyfriend of four years, Marquis de Lafayette start dancing (more like grinding) with each other in the middle of the room. John jumps up, pulling me up with him. Against my will he forces me to dance to the music.

Ha. We look like idiots.

With the help of Angelica, I manage to drag John back to our dorm room.

"Thanks again", I sigh, dumping John onto a bed.

"Your welcome. It's not like I'm not use to it though. John was always getting drunk", she laughs.

"And he still is. You want me to walk you back to your car? It's pretty late."

"I'm pretty sure I can make it back to my car by myself", she assures me.

"Yeah I know I was just-"

"I appreciate it. But no thanks. You have enough on your hands as it is", she says, nodding her head at John.

"Yeah, your right. Goodnight then", I say.

"Goodnight Alexander", she says and gives me a hug goodbye.

Angelica leaves and closes the door behind her. I turn back to John.

"What the hell am I gonna do with you?", I mutter to myself.

Shaking my head I undress him and tuck him into bed. I slip into bed beside him. I kiss his forehead.

"Goodnight"
