"Sara, congratulations! Darling!" Mom rushing to hug me,
"Mom, come on I haven't even cooked a single dish yet" I just got an e-mail from a restaurant in Paris! Oh my god, it's my dream job! Paris! Culinary! Freedom!
I saw a woman walking towards our living room, "SARAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" my best friend Rosella almost tackled me, not letting me escape from her hug,
"I'm deaf" I told my mom, she was holding her forehead like it was gonna pop from Rosel's scream,
"There's literally a ringing in my ear" mom answered,
"So when are you leaving? I mean, have you packed? Visa? Lodging? Have you signed any papers yet?" Rosella said while sipping from her green juice, she might look like your typical vegan-yoga-pilates girl, relaxed, laid-back, but she's a very type A person.
"Breathe, -sella!" I tried calming her down, "I've done all of that, except pack"
We were celebrating with mimosas, it was just my mom, Rosella and my younger brother Franco, my dad, as usual, is in the office, he runs the family business, my half-brother, Filo, from my dad's first marriage live in the other house, "The Bigger house" as we say, and my half-sister, Maria, god knows where she is,
We heard a doorbell, signaling that someone is outside, "Oh? Expecting anybody? Did you tell anyone else?" Rosel asked,
"No? Mom?"
"No, your dad won't be home for like 30 minutes" we peeked and saw who was outside,
"Isn't that grandma's lawyer?" Franco interrupted,
--------------
Celebration was paused when we crammed in one of our loveseats in the living room, mom was seating beside me while Rosel made herself into a proxy hostess and Franco was asked to stay at his room, visits from my grandma's lawyers were never good.
"Good Afternoon, Ms. do Santos... And, Meryl" the lawyer looked back down rummaging his documents,
"Wow, it's like taking a bullet" mom whispered, "so Raul, to what do we owe you this time? Here to cut more of my children's inheritance?" mom smiled cheekily, the man chose to ignore my mom's statement
"Mr. Do Santos --"
"my dad? Or my grandfather?"
"Grand father's family, has a will, and part of it is that--" Raul was interrupted when my dad's car pulled up the front door,
"Oh hello! Oh! Raul! What are you doing here?" they shake hands and dad sat at his own leather chair,
"So your father, will put your children's inheritance on hold, not until Ms. Cassandra has done her part of the will,"
"Me? Anything!" my grandfather has always been the nicest person in my dad's side of the family,
"No, stop" my dad interrupted, "Is this like... Is this like... Angela, my sister's part of the will?"
"Yes, sir" my dad sank back to his chair, thinking,
"Who's the man?"
"The name is still in private, until your side has agreed," Raul responses were quick, obvious that he was scared of my dad,
"Someone tell me what I'm suppose to do!" I was freaking out,
"The minute the first granddaughter turns 21, which is overlooked, 5 months ago, you're to be married"
"Married? What is this 1800s? And! I'm not the first granddaughter, its Maria and then Abby!"
"Honey, it's tradition" dad defended, stared at mom, "And Maria, is no longer considered, she's pregnant, and Abby, because of her... past, they didn't want her, so its you"
"They'll also hold off Franco's will, he's going to college soon, darling" mom said, there was a long discussion, we argued, we cried, and finally,
"Fine! For the family, for the goddamn business! Do I have to sign anything?" Raul handed me the papers, and I signed, "Now, who's the guy?"
"André Miguel Valente da Silva, goes by his shorter name, Andre Silva"
"Who's that?"
