I met you in the dark, you lit me up.
You made me feel as though I was enough.

Chapter One

The pain is unbearable- on a scale from one to ten, it would be a solid twelve. It feels as if someone is stabbing me in half, using a jigsaw or something. In the middle of these contraction's Nate is right there, cheering me on. He's never left me stranded, especially on days like today.

My gaze turns to him. Still amazed he is all mine, even with bags shining brightly underneath his red- rimmed eyes showing signs of no sleep. He brushes his lips, with the back of my hand- holding ir tightly as another pain-stricken contraction forces its way in.

A team of ten doctors, speed into the room, like cobras coming for their prey. "Isabella it's doctor Creswell, how are you doing today. Just breathe the baby will be out in a few minutes. "

Breathe in, breathe out.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Breathe in, breathe out.

I do as constructed until the tightness has relieved its unwilling pressure. Silently I question, how my mother did this for as long as she did. What a saint my mother is- Really!

Looking at the heart monitor, my vitals signs are perfect. "You're doing great, my love. Your vitals are in top shape, right where they need to be. "Nate mutters

Cranking my neck I see my vitals are: seventh over one hundred fourteen which to my amazement is normal. Especially when you're sprawled out in a very itchy yet, comfortable hospital bed giving birth to your first child.

" Doctor Creswell, can I speak to you out in the hallway privately?" Nate asked, his pointer finger stretched out gesturing to the row of chairs, which is overlooking the nurses' station.

The doctor agrees, placing in unfinished writings on the little mini pencil desk on wheels across the room. What could Nate have to speak, to Doctor Creswell about?

He must be nervous like all first time fathers are. I thought as the doctor strolls out. We have been in the hospital for hours, hooked up to every piece of machinery known to man.

Did I mention that I detest hospitals?

I hate everything about them.

Not knowing what Nate has to say to doctor Creswell, chills me to the bone. What if he walks out on the baby and me? If only this hospital room was prone for ease-dropping, but it's not- it's sound proof.

Would he ever leave us, I think not.

But only time could tell.

The sound of muffled conversations breaks through the walls. " I've been so nervous, these past few months, this is a new start, I don't want to mess things up" I heard Nate say hesitantly, placing his head in his hands.

My heart broke as the words sunk in. He doesn't want to mess things up, does he know I'm afraid of failing to, but no one is perfect in this universe- we have to be willing to make mistakes in order to learn from them.

" How're you feeling Isabella?" One nurse asked, looking my way as she is checking my progress. " Like a balloon, getting ready to explode," I said honestly, not sugar coating anything.

I spotted her expression, a deer In the headlights kind of look,

" You told me to express how I feel, now darn it I'm telling you," I said sarcastically as I ate some ice chips.

A weird robotic like movement occurs as I chew the last ice cube I could see him decent lower preparing to come into the world.

" He's crowning... " One of the nurses said, frantically.

I breathed " NATE, IT'S COMING!" the words fell out of me, as I began cursing in the wind. Doctor Creswell takes a position, as I begin to shout in agony.

It feels as if a thousand razors, are being dug into me. " Okay Isabella the head is out, now I need you to push like you mean it. " One more push, we'll have our baby" Nate muttered sweetly, into my ear. "You can do it!" He says squeezing the palm of my hand.

Isabella in three seconds you can hold your baby. I thought as I summed up everything I had to push.

" AHHHHH I can do THIS" Doctor Creswell glanced up, eyed Nate moved over as Nate took his place I screamed as loud as my lungs could withstand. " He's out, our son's out. Ten fingers ten toes "

Nate squealed, clasping his hands together,- his eyes welled with tears. I haven't seen this reaction since the day he told me about losing his dad at thirteen.

My love is happy again, which means I am happy too. " Congratulations Mommy, " Nate said, his elbow slightly nudging me, " Congratulations daddy" I smiled as I began to process what just occurred: Like a distant memory from years past, I played it in my head, " Congratulations Mommy. Congratulations daddy"

I snap back into reality, my eyes wide, " he's going to be perfect- because he has you as his father, that's all I could ask for. " His eyes started to well with tears again, ' you really think I'm going to be a good father, to our son?" He asked as he sat down slowly, not letting go of my gaze.

I breathe, feeling my heart grow faster with each passing moment I don't respond. " Honey, of course, you are going to be a great father, I've got faith in you".

Instead of responding, my gaze turns to him smiling at the little things, and what's new to come.
