Chapter Two

An elderly lady in a nurse's uniform, walks in, carrying our baby in her arms. The smell of her perfume is of Jasmine and citrus. In her arms is our son, cuddled tightly-his eyes closed, as if he's scared of this bright new world. " We have to run some test, you know standard protocol for newborns. She said, Nate stopped her, his head tilted as if to completely understand her logic. "What kind of test, are we talking about here, should we be worried?"

The nurse sat down, after handing the baby off to me.

Her fingers found the hem of her uniform-to fidget with. "The tests we have to run are of no harm. It's a protocol of the public health service. It ensures all babies have screened any certain conditions at birth.

"But what do you need to test him for?" Nate asked, his temper flaring, He had to be controlled, or else everything was going to go downhill. The elderly woman started to speak, but I politely stepped in.

"Baby, let the hospital do the job, we will have plenty adventures awaiting us," I said, my Palm centered in the middle of his chest as if to stop him. I sighed, letting the muscles ease with every deep breath he takes. Nate sighs, his voice adjusted to a much-relaxed tone, "I'm sorry miss, excuse my remarks toward you. I don't know what I was thinking."

The elderly woman narrowed her eyes, "Don't worry sir, when you've been in this field as long as I have, you get used to those remarks. Babies are a joyous gift. "

*******

" So what were you talking to doctor Creswell about?" I say to Nate as we sit in silence, alone with nothing to distract us. " Oh that " Nate mutters, " I'm just more nervous than I thought I would be that's all," He said, his eyes locked with mine.

Nate isn't the type to be nervous, until now.

I wish he would have told me this before.

" Honey why'd you wait not telling me this now":

He sighed, threw his hands up in the air. "I'm just afraid.... Of messing up" Nate admitted, choking up on his words.

I've never seen him like this- he's so vulnerable, it kind of scares me. He's been my rock through this, now it's my time to return the favor. "If you need someone to talk your problems out with I'm here. Don't you know that?" I say to him quietly, as my face nuzzles up with his.

We're both tired, our eyes begging for sleep: I popped my head up from his shoulder, with this idea that I couldn't shake. Even though my eyes begged otherwise, "Why don't we take a trip?" I blurt out my voice sounding chirpy- almost like I've had too much coffee, "Baby, take a rest you're beginning to sound delusional".

The word delusional made me laugh, "Yeah sweetie you're right- I don't know what I'm talking about. Thanks for talking some sense into me"

He's my sidekick for everything.

He mutters, eyes still closed, " It's not I don't disagree with you my love what I'm saying is, we need to focus on what's important right now. Let's get through these twenty-four hours first."

He really is, my everything. With that, I close my eyes: giving into the much-needed sleep.

Here is the second chapter of book two, I hope you enjoy it. Please bear with me as I figure out the updating schedule for this book, I'm thinking weekly but it depends on how fast & how much I'll be able to write the next chapters in the book. As we authors may know, trying to find days to post new chapters each week can be a very tough task. So if by some chance I cannot update weekly I will let you know.
