Up, down, up again, then wrap it around... Pull it tight... I slowly tied the knot in the rope, planning to tie it to the tree. I lowered the tailgate of my truck, then wrote a quick note that I stuck to the tree with the same blade I was going to use earlier. I fastened the end of the rope to the tree, standing on the tailgate. I was slipping the open loop over my head when I heard a faint ring from Andrew's jacket that I had left at the base of the tree. Let it ring... It's probably just the demons... I stood there for a second, until I was taking a final breath... I took a step and plunged to darkness...
~~~~~~~~~~Andrew's pov~~~~~~~~~~~
"DAMMIT DAWN!!" I pound on the steering wheel as the phone goes to voicemail. One of my friends lives next door to her and said she heard yelling from the house, then saw Dawn stumble out to her truck, bleeding.
I heard and hoped she'd answer her phone, but just in case I was headed to the drop off, where she told me she goes after a fight with her parents. I tear up the dirt road in my BMW, hoping to make it in time before she hurts herself again... She might not know it but she means the world to me and seeing her hurt is a new kind of pain for me. I'm slamming on the gas as some song- I think Broken Halo by Digital Summer- is playing through my speakers. She would love this song...
I slam on the breaks as I see her truck, blocking the view of a dead tree. I jump out of my truck and run to the tree calling her cell again. I hear the ringing of a bland tone coming from the tree and sprint there.
When I get there I see my worst fears have come true, as I see Dawn's body hanging from the tree. I reach up and feel her wrist... Wait...
I stay still for a moment before taking my pocket knife from my pocket and cut the rope down, quickly removing the rope from my love's neck. I shook her and then used CPR for a few minutes crying and praying that she wasn't lost to me. All of a sudden she gasped, and her beautiful eyes opened, looking up into mine... Thank God she's alive... I hugged her tight against my body, sobbing silently.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Dawn's pov~~~~~~~~~~~
I slowly open my eyes... Is this heaven..? I never thought death would feel so... Constricted..? Then I realise, I'm looking up into Andrew's face, tears rolling down his cheeks, and a huge wave of guilt crashes over me. I was so upset over my parents I forgot to think of how he would feel if I went through with it..
"How..?" I say softly, my throat hurt so badly that it came out raspy and pained.
"Shhh I'll tell you later just know I'm here... Please God don't ever leave me Dawn... Please... " And with that he held me tighter stroking my hair.
