Cammie's POV ~

Sometimes my mind would wander off and back to the topic of the secrets mom and dad kept from me. Their whole lives, they were born into the generation with no castes, whatsoever. They had the choice to grow up and be who they want to be. Never has my father ever gone in depth with details on their occupation. I find it kind of weird and suspicious in a way, but I'd never interrogate my mother like that.

I've never really asked her what father did  for a living anymore, thinking if I did, it would pain her to talk and think about dad. The truth never really has come out, even the story of his death was a blur and a lack of details.

Honestly, I didn't know what I was doing and regretted asking mom as it blurted out of my mouth, "Mom, what happened to dad? What even was his job?"

She turned around and like always, I saw that same sharp pain in her eyes for a split second, but she immediately hid her true feelings like she always did. I could always tell when she was lying, but I have always followed along.

"Kiddo, I know I always tell you this, but I will tell you when you're older."

"Mom," I looked straight into her eyes, "I've already grown up. I'm already 16 years old."

"You've grown up so well. He would be proud of you." A tear rolled down her cheek as she held me in her warm, strong arms. We stayed there for a while until she broke away and jokingly said, "Maybe I'll tell you once you get married. Married to Prince Zachary Goode."

"That is not going to happen." I told her, eyes wide open.

"Of course not, Queen Cameron Ann Goode." Even though I was annoyed of mom's teasing, I was happy to know that she had a smile upon her face again.

We spent the day together, having something like a mother daughter day. I saw the stack of paperwork on my mother's desk and I felt like I was distracting her from her work. She must've noticed me staring and so she quickly asked, "Do you want to watch a movie?"

"Sure," I replied, the stack of papers still in my mind, "I'm guessing a spy movie since those are your favorite?"

"You can choose whatever," She told me with a smile on her face. I knew deep down she was just being nice so I answered, "Spy movie it is."

We both fell asleep on the couch late that night, and I'm guessing my mom woke up and carried me to bed. My eyes fluttered open, it was only 2 am. right now. I climbed out of my bed quietly and headed downstairs for a glass of water to quench my thirst. At the top of the stairs, I noticed that my mother's office light was open. For a second I thought someone had broken in.

I tiptoed down the stairs as quiet as I could be. Sneakily peeking through the door, I saw her with her glasses on, working on that stack of paperwork. I felt bad for distracting her earlier and I was making my way back upstairs.

"Cammie?" My mother called out to me. I froze still, hoping she wouldn't walk out of her office, but she did.

"I was just getting a glass of water?" I whispered, sounding unsure. "I'm sorry for distracting you earlier today, and I guess I did it again right now."

"It's nothing, Cam," she assured, pulling me into a hug, "Now get a glass of water and go back to bed."

"Shouldn't you get to bed too?" I was worried about the bags under her eyes and the stressed look on her face.

"I'm fine." And before I could even object, she was already in her office, working on the paperwork like nothing just happened.

I didn't have the energy to put up a fight so instead, I listened. Drank a glass of water and went back to bed, but I couldn't help but be worried for my mother.

About a two week time skip:

(Still Cammie's POV)

I was just getting ready for bed, after listening to my mom ranting on and on about the Capital Report Broadcast to announce the 35 chosen girls next Friday at the usual 8 pm. timing. It was a Friday night at 10, and me and my mother decided that we were tired and went to bed.

I crawled into my bed sheets and a minute later, someone was tapping on my window. I got a little scared as I got out of my comfy full size bed to check what was outside. It was Josh. Who apparently climbed up to my bedroom window.

He held up a note for me to see, I read, "Meet me at our spot in 10 minutes." I nodded at him, signaling that he could climb back down now. Quickly, but quietly I got changed. I made sure my mother was asleep before walking into the dark night of Allens.

From the distance, I could see a dark shadow at our spot, waiting for me I stupidly thought. I walked a little closer and the moonlight shined down onto the tree house, in which was occupied by the shadows of two people. "Josh?" I called out to him. The two whipped their heads toward me, allowing to see their faces clearly.

"This isn't what it looks like, Cammie."

I recognized that girl, that bright blonde hair and stupidly perfect smile, her name was DeeDee. "I'm just going to go now," she awkwardly whispered.

Just about to leave, she even had the nerve to turn around, blow Josh a kiss and told him, "See ya around, Joshy." And she bumped into my shoulder as she walked away with a giant smirk on her face.

Slowly, I walked towards Josh in the darkness of the night. And then I slapped the crap out of him.

"Look, I know they're announcing the 35 girls next wee-" I cut that lying b!tch off.

"And you thought you could use that as an excuse for making out with that blonde bimbo DeeDee?!?!" I whisper-screamed at him.

"Don't talk about her like that."

"So now your defending her? Thanks a whole damn lot."

"I know you're going to be chosen, even if your in a pool of thousands of girls. You can do better than me, I'm just a son from a family pharMacey business."

"That's your pathetic reason? What happened to the other day where you told me that you loved me? Where I told you I loved you?"

"I-I'm sorry, Cammie. It's over."

Rachel's POV ~

I pretended to sleep when Cammie walked into my room. She waved her hand in front of my face a few times before she was convinced. Quietly, she tiptoed out of my room. I've never told her that I'm actually a spy. I looked through the window and saw her walk in the direction of the park. I trusted my daughter enough to come back, and so I sat on the couch in our living room, waiting for her to come home. And in 16 minutes and 34 seconds, she walked through the door. She had tears in her eyes.

"Mom?" She whimpered.

I got up from the couch the hug her, "Sweetie, what happened?"

"Josh cheated on me. Don't be mad that I snuck around with him and not telling you the truth," she whispered through her tears.

"I already knew. You've been sneaking around me for a while now, but I never asked why. I'm sorry, honey," I told her as I stroked her hair.

We sat down together on the couch eating ice cream early in the morning. Eventually she fell asleep on my lap and I carried her up to her bed just like the last time.

"It's all going to be okay now," I whispered before kissing her forehead goodnight.
