CALLIE CARTER had never been more excited for Christmas in her life. She loved spending it with her family, and yet this year her parents had arranged a two week cruise that regrettably began before her term at Hogwarts had finished. Naturally, she was devastated, but James Potter, ever generous, leapt at the opportunity to invite her to his house for Christmas – because "no-one should be alone at Christmastime, Callie!"

Oddly, as they boarded the Hogwarts Express just days before Christmas itself, Callie felt an overwhelming wave of anxiety. She had grown considerably closer with the Marauders in the past few years, and yet she had never been alone with James and Sirius for an extended period of time. The looming reminder that she was stuck with the pair for the two week long holiday had her almost regretting her decision – she wasn't entirely certain she could cope with their immaturity for that long alone.

Her nerves were eased immediately when they arrived, however, and she finally met James' parents for the first time. Euphemia Potter was an eccentric woman, and yet she radiated the caring and kind energy that James possessed himself. She welcomed her with open arms, squeezing her into a bone-crushing hug within seconds of walking through the door.

Fleamont was much the same, ushering her into the warmth of their surprisingly massive home. She was in awe at the skilful decorations, with stockings and tinsel strung up around the room, filling the space with a festive glow that could rival Hogwarts at the best of times. In the corner, beside the flickering fireplace, the Christmas tree sat proudly. It must have been at least seven or eight feet high, with baubles and lights dangling across the full branches. She was fascinated.

It barely took her a day to settle in comfortably, as she shared a surprisingly natural relationship with them both. While James' parents busied themselves during the day, they found ways to entertain each other, from playing childishly in the snow to challenging each other with board games and immature dares.

On Christmas Eve, James had decided to visit Diagon Alley, as he claimed he was in desperate need of buying presents — as per usual, he did everything last minute, so why would Christmas be any different? Sirius and Callie were banned from joining him, and thus, were alone for the day.

Callie couldn't deny there had been a certain something about Sirius as of late. He had been particularly flirtatious with her, more so than usual, and while this was part of their normal routine, lately she had felt her heart beating faster whenever he slipped a pick-up line or compliment into the conversation. She knew she needed a distraction, or else she had no clue what she'd do.

Ultimately, this was why she spent her day holed up in the kitchen baking cookies and cakes for the family to enjoy together the following day. Sirius was elsewhere, so much quieter than usual that she couldn't even tell where he had hidden himself. Regardless, she found he'd slipped her mind as she immersed herself in her baking, searching cupboards for ingredients and utensils as she worked away beside the oven.
