"Sorry, stuck at school."
On the bright side, ditching Arden, in a way, is showing she is not desperate to see him and would also give off the signal that she wants a proper date, not something else – something else that Arden would plan. On the other hand, as Kat being Kat, who is definitely not an optimist, walking into Mozart, far behind the two people whom she is not even sure she has spoken a word to before today, she couldn't help the voice in her head mocking she might have just waved goodbye to her only chance at the date she's wanted for years.
"No worries."
She raised her eyes from her phone screen to meet the guy with the beanie and dripping wet curls all over his face. He appeared to only have eyes for the menu in front of him. She mentally agreed with Arden. No worries, Kat had no worries about missing the date after she managed to put her phone aside.
Suddenly, Rogue dismissed the menu and a flash of energy seemed to hit him, "We're all ordering Pomegranate Iced Tea with our meal, deal?"
"Why?" Both Mary's and Rogue's eyes turned to Kat as if she'd said something drastically wrong. "Just do as I say, alright? You won't regret it, promise."
Kat's 'okay' turned into a diet coke while the other two both did, in fact, order iced tea. Rogue's deep green eyes, behind spectacles, turned to Kat with a hint of resentment, a splash of sarcasm and a little something else, not quite describable though a bit mysterious, "Don't you trust me?".
Kat may 'know' people thanks to her almost FBI level cyberstalking skills but still, why would someone trust – not merely about the choice of drink, but about anything - someone they have literally just met? This wasn't some Disney movie (Though Kat had watched her fair share back in the day).
As the orders found their places on the table, Kat realized that this guy might have been right about the iced tea, after all. The tall beer mug, filled with glass and drowned in red-at-the-bottom-orange-at-the-top-ombre iced tea, did look damn good. In fact, one may worry about him choking on it, considering how much Kat eyed that glass up. "Jealous?" Rogue smirked, curving the edge of his lips, revealing his dimples.
"Not at all." Kat's black eyes met his green ones. After a few seconds of suspense, Rogue moved both his gaze and fingers to his glass and pushed it swiftly towards Kat. She stared blankly at the glass and then at him, questioning. "Try." he said, still maintaining a smirk.
She did as told. Classic Kat, acting as if she were obeying while she actually just got what she already wanted. Before she was able to even make a comment on the iced tea, he ordered another one, "Told you it was good." His smile now, felt more genuine than sarcastic, for some reason.
Half an hour later, both Mary and Kat were done with their meals and Mary was eager to leave, especially after she found out that her friends were somewhere close-by, but Rogue's plate was practically untouched. "Wanna take that home so you can eat it for the rest of your life?" Kat's sarcastic mood was switched on. It was kind of weird, actually, since it would generally be a while before her artificial mask came off but with Kat and Rogue, both sarcastic people, there was a dynamic that Mary found hilarious.
When Rogue decided to leave his meal, half eaten, the rain had gained pace and puddles had formed all around the restaurant and there was one giant one, right in front of the exit. Mary jumped over it quickly, while Rogue was staring, or rather observing Kat, "You can't jump over this, you're so petite."
Great, even someone she literally just met is mocking her height, but then again, why be surprised - when people that haven't ever seen her in person, already do that.
