Chapter 7: Claire

"Bethany?" I ask confused. There is no way. But this girl looks exactly like Bethany. She has the same long brown hair that looks nearly black. She has those piercing blue eyes that look like they could stare right into your soul. She had the same frown, pinched up lips.

But Bethany died 7 years ago. It couldn't be her!

The girl who looked like Bethany looked at me not in confusion but almost in a look of fear. She doesn't want be telling people about her past.

Looking at Fallon, Mark and Cory she said,

"I must look like one of her friends, I have to take her to the elders." Nervousness creeping into her voice.

"Whatever Bates, but don't let the elders kill her, she's not a criminal. She spotted us and could have given away our location so we had to take her with us with minors injuries." Mark explained. He was worried to. What would the elders do to me. Wait, who the hell are the elders?

I walk over to Mark and kiss him on the cheek. I feel bad about using him. But if I want to get out of here I will have to.

"Come on." Bates(I guess) says as she grabs my arm and pulls me towards the gate.

Mark starts to follow.

"Mark stay here." Bates says. He mumbles something under his breath that I can't make out, but he stays.

We walk past rows and rows of houses. Everything here is neater and organized, but it looks almost lifeless.

Bates pulls me behind a building once we can't see the people at the gate.

"Claire what are you doing here?!" Bates yells at me.

"Bethany! I knew it was you." I say as I hug my best friend.

"Why would you come here?!" She whispers angrily.

"Bethany, they shot the mayor, and I went after them. Fallon shot me in the leg and took me with her." I whispered back. Why is she angry I'm here? You think that she'd be excited. I mean I was going to try and escape as soon as my leg was fully healed, but now I can leave sooner, Bethany seemed to have power here and can make up some excuse and we can go home.

"I know they shot the fucking mayor, I was part of that decision!" She said, nearly yelling. I was shocked. Why would she kill the mayor? She had never hated him. Well, to be frank she never hated anyone. Bethany was as harmless as a butterfly.

"Wha... Why?" I ask.

"It's not your problem. Now you need to get the hell out of here!" Bates whispered.

"No. If you force me to leave I'll tell them that you are from my village. I'm assuming they don't know." I say matter-of-factly, crossing my arms over my chest. I was not going to leave without Bethany. She looked as if the was about to argue, but I stared her in the eyes. I could always tell when Bethany lied. I new her tells. She would breath loudly through her nose and look you dead in the eyes with a look of extreme seriousness. She knew that I could tell if she was lying. The truth was about to come out of her.

"No, they don't know." She says. She looks down at the ground, almost in a look of embarrassment.

"What did you tell them?" I question. Her elders might not believe me, but any proof I could get could help me blackmail her. I needed to get out of here. With Bethany.

"That my family had grown up in the woods in a small village, but a fire destroyed everything. I told them both of my parents died and I had to walk for months to find this place." She says staring aat the ground. She refuses to meet my eyes. She left, she willingly left, without me.

"Why, why would you leave us, why would you leave... me?" I ask, my voice cracking. I was near tears. I had thought she was dead. And here she was acting like I was the bad guy. I had only hatred for her right now. The shock of seeing her alive starting to wear off.

"I hated life there. My family barely had enough to support me.My parents hated me. I saw the aircrafts from here taking supplies and I knew the general direction that the aircrafts went. I wanted a new life. I was eleven when I got here, and they appointed me to trainer! I have a life here! I don't live in a hell where there were bitchy parents...... and no YOU! "She whisper yelled, tears staring to stream down her face.

"So this is my fault?! When you left everyone thought that I fucking killed you!" I whisper yelled back. I can't believe her.

"Why did you hate me!?" I ask. She looks at the gorund, not bothering to answer.

"Fine. Don't say anything. I'm staying here for now. You say anything to kick me out and I'll drag you down with me!" I say. I storm over to where Mark, Fallon and Cory were standing. What did I do? Well I'm not leaving until I find out.

"Let's go." I say, still fuming. They look at me in suprise.

"Wasn't Bates supposed to take you to the elders?" Fallon asks suspiciously looking at where Beverly was standing looking at me with a look of pure hatred.

"I have something to tell you guys." I say bitterly.

"In private." I add. They nod and lead me towards the small, uniform houses that were not too far away.
