"Daryl parked on the gravel look out of the park, like he did almost every day. He cut the engine and got out. He looked toward the pond and saw her. She was balancing on the rock wall that outlined the big pond. She did it everyday. She never wavered or fell. She was pro.
He sat on his hood and lit his first cigarette. He fixed his eyes back on the girl. She did her usual route a few feet up the pond and then back to her starting spot. He just watched her. Then she waved to him. Something that never happened.
"What are you gunna just sit there?" She yells. He's stunned. He flicked his cigarette, got up and made his way to her.
"Uh sorry, I didn't mean to be a creeper." He says as he draws near. She laughs and jumps down.
"No need to be sorry." she says. She tries to reach for his arm, but misses.
"Help a blind girl out?" She says and he grabs her hand and places it on his arm. They walk to the bench and sit.
"How did you know I was there?" He asks, then he regretted it. She was blind. maybe she had a super power or something.
"I, uh, have a super power." she says leaning in and whispering. Her smile spread across her face. He couldn't help the butterflies that started soaring in his stomach.
"Also I smelled the cigarette," she added, sitting cross legged, facing him.
"Ah, so no super powers? Like you can't read my mind, or anything right?" He says, with a laugh. She smiled again.
"No. I can't. But my mom says I have a knack for reading faces." She says holding her hands up and wiggling her fingers.
"What do you say?" she asks after a few seconds of silence.
"You don't even know my name and you wanna touch my face." He says smiling. and she rolls her eyes.
"I'm Beth. Beth Greene." she says holdin her hand out.
"Daryl Dixon." He says taking her and shaking it.
"There. Now my I touch your face?" She says and he laughs a little. Her whole demeanor has him intrigued. She was so confident. It drew him in.
"Sure." He says and she raises her hands to his face. holding his cheeks, she palms his jaw. She moves to his chin and mouth.
So prickly." She says smiling. His breath catches as she softly runs her thumb over his lip. Her thumb lingers a second more before moving onto his nose and eyes. He closes his eyes and she runs her finger over them. She loves her finger over the creased wrinkles in his forehead.
"Why so tense beau?" She asks. He opens his eyes and he breathes out the breath he was holding. She runs her fingers over his hair and through it.
"well, you have to be older than me." She says.
"I'm 35." He says. playing with his fingers.
"I'm 21." She says smiling at him. He looks at her and just studies her.
"Are you staring at me again?" She asks with a smile still on her lips.
"Uh yeah sorry. your eyes are a very pretty blue." He says and she blushes. He smiles. she touches her cheeks.
"Damn it I'm blushing..." she says huffing a laugh.
They sit and talk for an hour. About how long she's been blind and about his family and his live. A man comes to Beth's side.
"Ready Bethy?" he says eyeing Daryl.
"Yeah poppa. This is Daryl." She says standing. The men shake hands.
"I guess I'll see you around." Daryl says touching her arm. She smiles that smile that made Daryl's inside melt.
"Not if I see you first." She says, hugging him. He slowly hugs back and smiles.
He watches as she links arms with her father and walk away. She turns back and waves to him. He smiles to himself and whistles back. He watches as she walks around the pond and finally disappears around the wooded bend and he then finally walks back to his car with a smile.
