Wesley's expression was slightly startled. Not the kind of startled like he got caught doing something he wasn't supposed to do. It was more of a surprised looked to see a familiar face so far away from Home. Or at least so far away from the Traipen clearing.

"What are you doing here?" he asked, voice full curiosity.

"I... um..." Avery hesitated.

Should she tell him the truth? What if he thought poorly of her? After all, hadn't their parents warned them all about the dangers of the city? Or was it just her?

Avery didn't care.

Wesley was her dearest friend and she wasn't about to lie to him over some silly thing she'd discovered.

"Um..." she continued, "I was.... I... "

Avery made a bunch of gestures with her hands, but none of them meant a thing to Wesley.

His expression was overtaken with confusion.

"Okay, so you know how I climbed that tree the other day?" Avery asked.

"Yeah," Wesley replied.

"Well when I was up there, I was looking around, enjoying the scenery and the most curious thing caught my eye," she rambled, rapidly coming to her point, "Well I saw these tall buildings and the mere sight of them just drew me in and I just wanted to be a part of that because it was so beautiful and all my life, I've wanted to be somewhere other than in the fields and I've finally found the place where I wanna be and...."

Avery stopped.

"Does that make any sense?" she asked tilting her head.

Wesley chuckled and nodded.

"To be honest with you, I've been to the city's edge many times myself," he said as he buried his hands deep in his pockets.

"Really?" Avery asked startled.

"Mm hmm," Wesley said nodding.

"I've always wanted to go there, but I've never really mustered up the courage," he said.

Avery frowned slightly.

"I'll probably never go because I'd be happy both in the fields or in the city, so..." he continued, "I wouldn't mind living in the fields if that's what my family wants."

"Oh," Avery said slightly disappointed.

"But I'd definitely come to visit ya if you did decide to move there," he added, trying to cheer her up.

Avery looked up and smiled at him.

There was about a two second pause before Avery launched at him, latching herself around him in a hug.

Wesley chuckled and Avery felt better than she'd ever felt before.

She'd finally found someone who didn't mind her rebellious little self.

She'd found someone who didn't mind her odd quirks and habits.

But most of all, she'd found a friend.
