Chapter Eight (Aidan's POV)
I couldn't take it anymore.
I couldn't stick around and pretend that they were my siblings, that he was my brother, when he wasn't.
The worst part was that everything Raven said was true and I was so angry at him for it. It's not supposed to be this way. Raven isn't supposed to be the one I loved. He hurt me. I wasn't about to be one of those pathetic people who ran back to the person who hurt me.
Grow up.
I bounded through the woods, heading past the lake and into Amethyst territory. It was dangerous to be entering their territory without permission, but I needed to get away from everyone. I needed to be alone. Unfortunately, this was the part of Amethyst's territory that I'd never been in. It was dangerous to be lurking around here.
It looked like it too.
The sunlight was having difficulties seeping past the canopy above, so only little streams poked through to shine at the rotting ground below. Fallen trees, decaying logs. I moved carefully, picking my way over heavy obstacles.
I honestly had no idea where I was going. I didn't like it here. There was no sunshine, no birds chattering, no mice running around. It felt so dead here. At the same time, I rather be here than there.
I crept along quietly, making my way to a pond that had water leading from the Black Water Lake. I glanced around before inching forward to peer into the water. My reflection stared back at me and I grimaced, my reflection mimicking me. It reminded me of Cal, and I felt worse about leaving now.
Cal was my brother. He always would be. I know he was freaking out about everything that was going on and I hated doing that to him, but I couldn't stand being around Raven any longer.
The entire time we were hunting, he wasn't watching the buck or Rylan or Cal or the doe. He was watching me. I noticed the way he was staring at me when Cal tended my wound and was expressing his worry.
I breathed a sigh and leaned over, taking a lick at the pond when I heard a flutter. My eyes flickered and I jerked my head up to see a huge black raven sitting on one of the branches stretching across the pond. He twitched and cocked his head at me, beady black eyes staring.
I took a step back, but I suddenly felt frozen as the raven shuddered and flung its wings out before folding them back in, lowering its head slowly.
This is just too creepy.
I rather deal with Rylan and his stupid insults than be here any longer.
I started to back up again, but the raven threw its wings out again and screamed.
"No! No! No!" It shrieked, then shot up into the trees, leaving a feather and leaves in its wake. I had leapt back by now, then whirled around to run, but yelped when I saw a wolf moving through the trees toward me, head brought down low.
I withdrew, until I remembered that the pond was behind me before I winced, looking up as a large russet colored wolf approached me, his teeth bared in a wicked smirk.
Well, well, well. What have we here? Hmm... Smells like Blood Rain. You must be the runt. Glad we can formally meet. The name's Luc. Luc Black. He greeted, holding his head up high now. I sank low. He wasn't of higher rank, but he was huge. He was about as big as Raven, which just made me wince.
I was just leaving. I stated, trying to take a step to the side. Luc followed me, keeping his muscles bunched, tensed for a fight that I wasn't ready for.
