Chapter Twenty-Three (Raven's POV)
"Aidan! Aidan, please, wake up!"
I was scared now.
Terrified.
He wasn't moving anymore or whimpering or crying, just lying there limply on the bed with his brown hair brushed across his sweaty, tear-stained face. I felt around his throat for a pulse, but found none. I felt terror grip me further.
"Aidan!" I heard my voice crack.
"Move, I'm going to shock him." Kyler ordered. Zaid and I shared quick looks and backed up. Kyler grabbed the defibrillator from the cart and snapped the switch on, rubbing the two paddles together. He pressed them to Aidan's chest and he jumped, but his eyes still didn't open. I looked at Zaid, who looked back at me, pale and horrified. I felt like I was looking at my reflection before we turned back to hear a low cry, then harsh gasping and choking.
"He's awake!" Zaid gasped. I turned and sure enough, Aidan was choking on his breath, his eyes flickering around wildly in terror. I was at his side again immediately, taking his hand tightly in mine. As soon as he felt my hand, he looked up and the horror in his eyes slowly began to fade.
"Leave him hooked to the IV. He's lost a lot of blood." Kyler ordered. We obeyed because truth be told, Aidan was pale, deathly pale. His skin was a chalky white and even the little veins in his eyes were faded. His eyelids looked heavy and shadowed, his lips a pale pick.
I stroked his knuckles as Kyler tended to his cut, stitching it a second time before placing a gauze pad over it. In the meantime, we listened to the little yips and whimpers of four puppies as Remi and Scythe cleaned them off and stabilized them.
"We did it," Aidan managed, his voice hoarse and shaky as he looked up at me tiredly, "I'm not dead. Not anymore anyway."
"Don't scare me again." I answered, surprised by the tremor in my voice. Aidan smiled sleepily and reached out, pulling me close to kiss me. I kissed him back desperately, gripping him to me tightly before letting him relax against the bed.
"I want to see them." Aidan murmured. I nodded and looked at Kyler, who was already holding one of them. A pure, snow white puppy that wriggled and whimpered in Kyler's grip. I gently took the pup in my hands and held it close to Aidan, who looked awed.
"He's so small!" He exclaimed as I placed the pup in his hands. The pup whimpered and nuzzled Aidan's lips before Aidan smiled warmly, stroking its small head.
"Hey, Skye." He greeted. I smiled at the name we'd chosen, then looked up as Kyler passed us the second puppy. A small one, entirely black, not a speck of white or gray on him. He was yipping desperately, pawing around for his father. I held him to Aidan, who beamed at the sight of him.
"That's so cool! They're black and white!"
"Don't tell me you're going to change their names now to something cheesy," I drawled, raising an eyebrow at Aidan, who blushed, "Night and Day would just make them hate you."
"Skye and Seth. I'm sticking to my original names because they're just that awesome. That and you'd be the one complaining more than them." Aidan added with a snort. I smirked, then cradled the black puppy to me closely, looking up as Kyler handed a speckled gray and white one to Zaid, who cooed over it, stroking its fur. Scythe held the fourth puppy, a small gray one with black paws and the tip of its tail also black.
"The speckled one is Jasper," Aidan informed, "And the gray one is Ares. Anyone want to argue about those names can kiss my ass." Zaid rolled his eyes and Scythe smirked as they stroked the puppies fur and Kyler sighed.
